First...Geo I did not intend to steal any of the thunder and wonder of your fantastic video, just it seemed like this would be the place to post the images. No "My bird is bigger than your bird" intended...I should have posted this last night.

Yes West, the eagle is in fact banded, and the resolution on the first image is so good that you can read the numbers! Now, while I know that he has a real good camera, I also think it says something as to how close that bird came to the boat... A number of breeding pairs were set out at the Quabbin Reserviour some time ago, and they seem to have flourished there. I have seen several in my travels "west", once one just sitting in a tree across the Deerfield River in Charlmont, MA and it looked like a small airplane roosted there it was so big.

These images wre taken by Lee Baron of Leominster, MA. He was one of my Lieutenants, now also retired, when I worked on the fire department.

If I could throw in here, it's always good to see an increase in awareness/appreciation of our birds of prey, especially since we almost did 'em in with DDT not so long ago.

Bald Eagle

We have a winter count here on the main river that flows down from the Cascades and this year's count, on a 2-mile stretch of the river was 650 individuals. Not too shabby.
And we have nesting pairs all over the place, so I think they like it here.

Ok this may be hard for some of you to believe but we have Bald Eagles right here in Central New Jersey!

Not two miles away from where I sit is the Manasquan Reservoir and we've had a nesting pair of Bald Eagles living there for quite a few years now. We have also seen Bald Eagles a little further north of us at Cheesequake Park and down then south at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.

The annual eagle count from December 2011 lists 113 nesting pairs in the state of New Jersey! (And you thought we were nothing but stinky refineries!)

No Grot, ya gotta love the Pine Barrens...

I may have been off on how the eagles were established in Quabbin, so here is a pretty good link that tells the story...too long to regurgitate here:

http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/ ... count.html

Also, in case one asks "What is the Quabbin Reservoir?" here is a link to that:

http://www.foquabbin.org/q_a.html

I can give a brief summary to that...in the late 1800's Boston knew it was in trouble regarding water supply for the future, and the towns in the Swift River valley were sacrificed for it...home and landowners getting pennies on the dollar for their property...or not...and most everything was dug up in anticipation of the new reservoir...building didn't start until the late 20's, and the area wasn't completely flooded until after WWII !

Thank you for your kind words, Geo. Not really a historian, just happened to read several old books about the Quabbin tragedy. Almost like 100 years later, and Daniel Shays was right!
