Remember the Phase Linear preamp/power amp components? Bob Carvin's magical noise reduction circuity. Always wanted those, never got them. Man, their marketing made them sound so ahead of the game at the time, circa 1976. Bang & Olufson turntables and speakers that doubled as oriental room dividers....

THD and cartridge s/n ratios. Listening to Steve Martin, getting small, and devouring audio catologues. I think I majored in that in college for a couple years.

Well, whatever.

About three years ago the wife and I decided to buy home theater stuff. None of the old knowledge applied to anything. The youthful electronic super store kids could not understand my questions, and I could not relate to anything.

Wound up with a huge A/V receiver and expensive Bose 5.1 speakers. It's great for DVD's and such. But it does not sound like a great stereo when you fire up the old LP's. It is not as good as the old days.

So I go down to the basement and play music thru my old Yamaha integrated amp and Bose 501 speakers, circa 1984.

I like the old style a lot. I miss LP's in the record store.

Zilla is a real dinosaur.

Since Jeff so nicely opened the door to Klipsch.....We called the Phase Linear equipment "Flame Linear", and we actively warned people buying Klipsch Cornwall speakers against Phase Linear! There were a number of cases back then of Phase Linear's catching fire when hooked to that model. It turns out the amplifier was very sensitive the impeadence of the speakers.

Speakers are called 8 ohm or 4 ohm etc (actually a lot more complex than that), but very few speakers are the same impeadence all the way across the frequency range. The Cornwall was really wide in impeadence and at high volumes the amp just could not take it and would actually burn. In one case the speakers went up as well. Interesting times!!

Welcome the club you old coot!

BTW, the Phase linear equipment sounded really good with speakers that had a more constant impeadence.

Gawlee Zilla,

I'll bet you had an 8 track. I said something about 8 track around my sons the other day and they just looked at me with this perplexed look.

What did you guys have in your car? The kid here sported the Craig Powerplay and the Powerplay speakers with the magnets that were so heavy youd get a hernia trying to get them into the trunk. Anybody remember that rig?

I'll bet you had an 8 track.

Aside from car & home players, I had an 8 track boom box with a shoulder strap. I would ride my bike with it.

 Don, I didn't think you were old enough to have had an 8 track.
Wow, you're old! :D

Nay, West, no 8-track. Hated the concept. Zilla was an LP purest, a dino at an early age.

My wife, however, had an 8-track deck in her car when we met. I found tapes of the Doors' MORRISON HOTEL and L.A. WOMAN for $2 apiece and played them constantly until that car died.

"Out here on the perimeter, there are no stars.
Out here we is stone. Immaculate.
Listen to this I'll tell you 'bout Texas. Tell you 'bout Texas radio..."

From "The Wasp"

And, gee whiz, P, the audio catalogues failed to mention that Phase Linear was highly-flammable. Glad I never had the bucks to burn....

8 tracks, think how much room there would be in the land fills if they had never been invented. Do ya'll recall how filthy a box of 8 track cartridges became after sliding around in the trunk for a few months. Or after 4 years in a box on the garage floor.

I thought CD's were going to be the absolute final solution. Lately I'm thinking it's all obsolete, internet & satellites are the place to get music.

Internet radio particularly.

Zilla,

I still have most of my vinyl LP collection. I rarely play any, & I replaced as much of the key stuff as possible with CD's. Dustbunnies collect ont he turntable, still, it's fun to pull out Reverend Gary Davis or Jefferson Airplane & entertain the kids upon occasion.

I'm still spinning LP's on an old Dual 501 TT, Jeff. Only problem is I don't like using headphones, so it's a gotta-have-the-house-to-myself thing. That doesn't seem to happen much.

I loved everything about the LP - the big album covers, the jacket pix and lyrics in type you could actually read, the way they fit into store racks that you could flip thru rapidly.

I have CD's but they just are what they are. My LP shelves comprise my life and times, you know.

Nicely stated, 'zilla.

Many years ago, I sprung mega-bucks for a Transcriptor Reference turntable, and SME arm. Apart from cartridge updates, it's still giving sterling service, and that vinyl sounds oh-so-sweet !

I'm almost tempted to spring for an old Quad valve amp, but I'd need to take out a mortgage to afford some nice NOS KT88's.

Wowee!

What a cutie, if I was Will Robinson's robot, I'd ask her out on a date.

All I have left of my old stereo is the turntable. It's a 1960 TD 125 with a Shure SME tonearm and a Shure V15 cartridge.

Yes, I am looking into having all my CD's converted to vinyl.
