......... which again shows that there are still people with more money in their wallets than brains between their ears!

Seems like I could try sell some of mine there : I've got a Pierre Fontaine Paris (Study), a vintage Takamine EN 10, a couple Lags and a Gitane 310... After all, I can play some of his songs and he can't play mine...;)😊 !!

Indeed!! They went well beyond even bloated expectations. Wouldn’t doubt if Knopfler himself informed all his rich and famous friends. Funny how some will gladly cut a generous check to a famous friend’s charity…but if they also get a guitar out of it, they’ll give boatloads!

I do follow a lot of these sort of auctions (in my lifelong hunt for Led Zep memorabilia) Had he auctioned off the guitar wrote/recorded Sultans on, it may have topped a million.
and if you want to know what some off the wall Zep items often go for....this was just yesterday. A personalized bathrobe given to each member at the the start of the 75 US tour by employees of their label Swan Song, this one to the late great John "Bonzo" Bonham, sold at auction (including auctioneers premium) $23,780. For a friggin bathrobe!! I guarantee you when Jimmy passes, his #1 59 Les Paul will fetch the highest price ever paid for a guitar...ever. Easily over 10-15 mil. If not double/triple that considering what that guitar has done and where it's been since late April 69 at the Fillmore West.

The Christie's auction happened in London on 1/31 and here are the results for the two Starfires:

Quite remarkable that the 59 reissue sold for over 85% of what the genuine 59 did! A record for a reissue and really only because it was the Money For Nothing and Brothers in Arms guitar (also played at Live Aid).
