OK, I finally took some time to try this but didn't get too far (I'm sure because I'm on Mac, these seem like excellent inhale/exhale directions)
1) found Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks hit dead end, couldn't find Import or Backup. Looked around other places, edit, preferences but no go.

Thanks for the feedback. I did discover that they were Windows oriented. Since there is a bit of finding files on disk I know I don't know that for a Mac.

On Firefox 3.5.5 on Windows 7 I click on Bookmarks and get a drop down menu. I select Organize Bookmarks... from that and get a new window. The title is Library. There is an action bar with Organize, Views, Import and Backup and a Search box. Now that I look at it that window looks pretty Windows-centric so that may be why you couldn't find it.

This was much easier when the Profile Manager was user visible. I have since found out that it was deliberately hidden but instructions to access it are here.

Since I am lazy, the next time this happens I am going to suggest that someone go to that link, enable profile manager and then use it to create a new profile.
