Hello all.
I think I am a Guild fanatic...
I didn't even know what a Guild was, having been brainwashed into thinking a Martin or Gibson or Taylor was the best one could get..
And being too poor to go buy one of those, I got by for 20 years or more with el-cheeeeeepo acoustics and borrowed low mid level stuff.
Always been an acoustic guy, I love electric rock too, but electric guitars feel flimsy and I feel like I'll break them...being so used to man-handling the acoustics..
Then one day I was waiting to get an inspection sticker for my car and ran into a friend who was there for the same reason..
In shooting the shyte, he said he was headed to the pawn 25 miles upstream to see if he could get $25 out of an old guitar he had in the trunk...
Naturally, I had to see it...
And I almost cried.. ..the thing was under wrenches, empty beer cans, had mildew started, it was heart breaking..I looked it over, and offered him $20, telling him he'd spend the other $5 from the pawn on gas getting there and back..
So he took it, and I went home with the sad creature. I never even looked at the make...it didn't seem to matter at the time, as I just wanted to save the thing from a fate worse than death.
After I cleaned it up, got the mildew off, scrubbed the beer off, changed the strings and all that...I realized it was a Guild. Still didn't mean anything to me at that point.
Then I strummed a few chords...
Woooooooooooowwwww..
I looked at it again with new eyes...and did a bit of investigating.. :?:
I had a $20 1977 Guild D25M....COOL!
After some more research, I began to understand what it really was, and how much respect it had among true guitar people.
That was 2 years ago now, and I play it every single day..It sounds amazing, and a Guild certified tech looked it over and said it was in fine shape and I should abandon the idea of re-finishing it....
(It's WELL worn as far as the wood goes, thanks to the idgit that used to own it..but the neck and frets are in great shape)
So, a few weeks back I decided to look for forums where I could talk to other acoustic types, with an emphasis on Guilds.
And here I am. I also joined up at AGF, but I think this place will be more my speed...
And now I am searching for more Guilds to add to my pitiful collection of orphan guitars..A nice D40, D55, and a Peacock would be good as a start!
