Even if you're not a fan of this artist checkout the Guild and the swinging tone/tune:

 8)

Does anyone know if this is a newer Guild Starfire or a very excellent condition older one?
No harp or Bigsby style tail...? Stoptail...

I'm really beginning to understand the Mojo you guys have been talkin' bout.

Hi F30 and thanks for the link. That vid of John Mayer was threaded here on LTG a few months ago ... and maybe before that too.

There's a Search function in the upper right center of every page. I searched on "John Mayer" and found the previous thread in no time. It's a useful way to keep everybody from seeing the same stuff over and over. It's a useful way to keep everybody from seeing the same stuff over and over. :)

Thanks for the help with repeated postings.
I fairly new to the forum as I have recently tuned more heavily into Guild's and the forum - so any help is welcome.
I did like that clip because it at least shows that John Mayor has some taste in guitars and wasn't playing Stevie Ray clone riffs/material.

From the John Mayer clip that seems to be a late production Guild Starfire IV probably from the Fender Corona plant....no Bigsby or Harp but a stop tail
plus the truss rod cover is blank without the old Starfire logo or the "SF-4"......also looks like the later full size humbuckers and finally looking at mine the "sunburst" is identical with that slight poly shine.
All in all who is this John Mayer and how so famous for a rather average Blues player and there are better players on the pub circuit.....I know one plays a Telecaster and one plays an SG but this John Mayer is not a patch on Wilko Johnson or Tony McPhee in their pomp.....standards have fallen.
Many thanks for the Buddy Guy clip which is simply awesome.....there is a clip somewhere on YOUTUBE of the final gig by Lightning Hopkins and it
has to be one of the best clips of the Guild Starfire IV sound out there and Ol' Lightning is as ever on top form.

Anyone else agree that in the JM clip that is a sunburst Corona built Starfire IV.....which is what I've got and enjoyed seeing an identical late Starfire IV
in that classy sunburst up on the not so big screen anyway....that guitar is the real star of the clip.....this thread is turning out to be something of a YOUTUBE Guild Starfire 4 fest....and that in itself is a very good thing indeed....anyone found the Lightning Hopkins clip?

S'ok F30; I got it the first time; - you posted the vid to celebrate the guitar, not necessarily the player. John Mayer is rich, successful, good-looking guy who, say some, has gotten a lot of mileage of being an average player.

If I was doing as well as he is, I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over my chops.

This gave me pause to wonder if it may simply be a case of a very dependable workmanlike musician, someone the label can depend on to deliver consistently if not neccessarily spectacularly, on cue. Labels love that stuff.
I must admit, as one of those "temperamental artist" types, I actually give those guys a certain amount of grudging respect. And some of 'em I don't even begrudge the respect.
But I still follow my own muse.
And Guilds are my favorite tools for the job.8)

Hi Al; I think the labels like him because his fans buy his CDs, attend his concerts, and friend him on Facebook. :D

Just found the clip again of the legendary Guild Starfire IV maestro Sam Lightnin'Hopkins on YOUTUBE and the title is "Lightnin'Hopkins Last European Gig" if anyone can do the boffin/technical stuff and do the link....Quality stuff headphones on people....the real blues and a great Guild Starfire tonality.

Hey, I don't have a thing against JM, couldn't care less about his being rich, succesful, goodlooking, a jerk according to a bunch of people - I just don't like his music much! (and I've heard and even tabbed a bit of it - I'm a guitar teacher amongst other things... :| )

Thanks for doing the math on the Lightnin'Hopkins link.....some of that phrasing and attack on the first instrumental is pure Guild Starfire IV and you don't get that on a 335....just a class vehicle of blues and jazz and in short just such soul and expression where even the visceral is intricate and exact
with a purity and honesty......got to be the best 335 type out there and I mean it kills the Gibson although my USA Epiphone is out there and strident and all that it just but doesn't have the sophistication of the Guild.....just love me Epiphone but this Guild Starfire IV is just something else.....it is an
incredible instrument and acoustically alive....got to say that perhaps the Fender factory Guild HB1 mock ups probably could do with a custom rewind and Bare Knuckle Pickups are when I can afford probably the first point of call in the UK......would love a response to say what I should ask them and request in terms of the "winds" and the particular output figures for the original Guild HB1 so they can turn me Fender jobs into real Guild HB1 jobs.
Final Guild Starfire IV on the YOUTUBE comment if anyone hasn't seen that American kid....she has got a Corona Starfire IV and some sort of X170
or somesuch Guild jazz semi (Manhattan/Stuart) whatever the name but this young women is going to be beyond great and is already an incredible player.....think her name is Alicia and the youtube name is "bluesbaby8" but having watched nearly a dozen clips even as a kid she is well beyond John
Mayer and the future.

Meh, that JM clip is much too calculated, clean and civilized for my taste, I'll take this instead for a "blues shuffle with Guild" : The Paladins play Brook Benton's "Kiddio"

Hey Broe(s), sweet clip from the Paladins! I am ashamed to say that I don't know much about them, but that will have to change.

Is that an X-500T? Any idea of the approximate year of that guitar?

Edit: I got the answer as I just did some looking...X-550 from 1957.

save for the fact him doing as well as he is has nothing to do with his chops, which are what the Mayer fanboys celebrate most. He is popular because he write bubblegum pop songs for fratboys and teenage college girls. He is getting lots of mileage from SRV and Jimi licks over and over again while writing songs with very little content. His personal life doesn't matter to me, I base my assessment on his playing and the music, which is unbearable. I have tried several times to listen to various discs of his, but cant make it through a whole song without skipping the the next one. This is common knowledge, but, there are plenty of more talent players out there we have never of since they are too busy gigging and playing good music to worry about twittering, writing pop songs and making the tabloids.

Bonamassa and Derek Trucks come to mind immediately.
