Touche!
 Seems, It never ends. This from a recent article:
"In Judd Appatow’s new romantic comedy This Is 40, Paul Rudd’s character compares his relationship with his wife to Simon and Garfunkel, telling her, “You’ve made me Garfunkel!” “I don’t even know what that means!,” she replies.

Tonight, Paul Simon posted the following message on his Facebook page:
 Oops cant link it. But Paul essentially said Garfunkel was part of S+G, and a very talented musician and producer in his own right.....and that the joke was not funny.
Art Garfunkel has yet to comment."

Well if it's on Facebook it must be true.
Errr, "relevant".......no, that's not quite it, either...........
OK, "valuable marketing demographic information generator for advertisers".
And shareholders.
So, in the absence of vocal inflection and facial expression informational content to accurately convey his intent, do you suppose he meant it "really wasn't funny", or it simply wasn't funny??

<end of snark attack on Facebook>

So I was reading that Paul Simon's F30 Special had Brazilian Rosewood (correct me if I'm wrong), whereas the next ones have indian rosewood. How much of a difference would this have on the tone? I have heard that brazilian rosewood is the creme de la creme, but is also very rare now.
Noticed this thread and thought of you:

Haven't checked this forum in a while.. what a great find. I would be really disappointed that I missed out, but I really want a purely acoustic version, with no pickup and volume/tone knobs. But the brazilian rosewood and ebony board.. I bet it sounds amazing.

I still need a couple months before I can buy anyway, so hopefully soon an even truer paul simon guitar will become available

Just an observation.... I've heard most of Paul Simon's recordings after S&G, and I've never heard any of his guitars sound as good and readily identifiable as his Guilds. Such a wonderful, unique sound. I wonder whatever happened to those guitars, especially the F-30R Special #2 that was such an integral part of the S&G sound. I was listening to The Boxer, Mrs. Robinson, etc today and man!...what a great sounding guitar.

DC

I couldn't agree more.. his guilds sound incredible. S&G's live albums from 1967 and 1969 really shows the incredible tone and character of the guild.

Right now I'm really stuck on Old Friends, and Leaves that are Green.

Especially "Mrs Robinson".
Do you know if it's on "Me And Julio..." too?
The technique of getting that string sound of the quick F# A B C# E F# run at the beginning and elsewhere in "Mrs. Robinson" is simply incredible. I've tired and can't duplicate that bright, deep snappy "metal" plucking sound. Amazing. I was just listening to it again today....over and over.

I don't know what he was using on "Me and Julio", but sounds like he's strumming far ahead of the sound hole over the fretboard to get that "contained" mid-rangy sound. From the recording/release date of 1972, I would guess it's one of his F-30Rs.

hahhaha.

Well getting the Guild F-30R is the plan, but I don't think I will be able to fund it until June, maybe July. So still a 2-3 months away.

I'm still undecided if I should pick up a new F-30R, or hope another vintage F-30 special comes on ebay, which could well be never.

It's a good plan, as far as having the time to do whatever you do, "your way".
I had to do the same, saving up the shekels for the D25, as I was living on quite a strict budget at the time. It actually took about 6 months. The counterpoint was that by the time I was ready to buy it the salesman was ready to give a great discount. Admittedly in '97 the market was a bit different than today, I actually got to pick between 3 Guild archback dreadnought guitars on display, before we even start talking "jumbos" or "mini jumbos"...
It occurs to me that if you strike up a good rapport with a local instrument dealer there may be fringe benefits, perhaps he might even order one in for you to get acquainted with.

Two-to-three months isn't that long. But I can pretty much guarantee you're not going to find an F-30R Special like Simon's with Brazilian rosewood. If I were you, I'd be realistic and go for something like this when funds are available:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/GUILD-F30R-STAN ... 5654cb888e

Excellent price with free shipping from a top rated+ seller that offers a 14 day trial period.

Hey, we'll get you hooked up with a great F-30R yet! Just leave it us to get your hard-earned money spent...but for a good cause

You definitely make a good point, I just really hope that if I'm spending this kind of money, to get what I want.. and that is the tone/playability of paul simon's guild. I am absolutely obsessed with his tone, and I don't think its just his playing (which is incredible) because as he switch guitars over the years, the tone definitely changed.

In regards to the new F-30Rs not having Ebony fretboards... years ago I played a classical guitar that had an ebony board and it just had the most incredible feel to it. That being said, it was an $8,000 guitar.. so the feel probably had a lot to do with the excellent craftsmanship.

I think the real reason for ebony boards on acoustics at least, is that being so hard it's more resistant to flexing/twisting/gouging. Basically helps create an instrument with a longer anticipated useful life by having a stronger neck. In fact you frequently see them combined with 3-piece necks which are definitely built that way for stability.
Bob Taylor's working on creating a sustainable supply so it wouldn't surprise me if became more readily available relatively soon.
Another reason that your patience could well be rewarded with the availability of your "ideal" package.

I can tell by the two light spots at the front of the pick guard that it's Simon's F-30R Special #2, but that fretboard sure looks like rosewood to me. Must have been the lighting, printing, .... :?:
