Folks.

I have edited the posts with the Tower Girl image so that people who wish to gaze upon her again will have to click on a link and those who are offended don't have to see her when she visits the thread. There have been complaints and concerns and not directly linking with an IMG tag seems like a compromise. I fully expect to get yelled at by both the folks who see nothing wrong with displaying the picture and the folks who get upset when the Tower Girl is even mentioned.

Thought that was s'posed to be "leave no turn unstoned"?
:D
Actually, it's supposed to be "leave no TERN unstoned."
It was an order to utilize a last-resort technique to kill all the diseased terns on a small South Pacific island where no other means were available.

Ahhhh.... I thought that one was because we'd a-bombed the natives back to the stone age and the fish had become inedible.
They had nowhere else left to tern except rocks and burds.

I guess the setup that involves using the terns in chemical "experiments" is just not funny enough to refer to?

Go for it! We're a somewhat captive audience,

I thought it was about Howard Stern's awful screeching guitar playing; he left no tone unStern'd.

Wasn't it Ken Kesey (Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test) who wrote "No Left Turn Unstoned"?

"Leave no left turn unstoned".
While I'm sure Kesey didn't actually coin the phrase, it does ring a bell. "Electric Kool Aid Acid Test" was actually authored by Tom Wolfe, by the way. But still a pretty good read. :D
I'm thinking it might have been part of the decorations on the bus "FurthUr" at some point, but yeah I think it does get mentioned in there..
Or possibly coined by Gilbert Shelton, the creator of the "Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers".
Brownie (non-medicinal) points for anyone who remembers Shelton's most famous
slogan....
Speaking of Kesey/other authors, let's play "6 degrees of Ken Kesey":
How many people know that Larry McMurtry was a Prankster for a short time?
Can you name the book in which he describes his first encounter with "venison chili" (with the special cactus ingredient) in a rundown Palo Alto cottage by Stanford University?
Does anybody else see an unusual coincidence in the similarity of the names "McMurphy" (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) and "McMurtry"?
Anybody catch the epsiode of "AxMen" mentioning logging the "Kesey tract", in Oregon? (Kesey moved his family to Oregon in the early '70's, and his second novel was about a logging family in Oregon). What are the odds that's his old property?
OK, who's next? :D

I stand corrected - EK-AAT was about Kesey & the Pranksters, not written by him.

Anyone driving to Kesey's domain had to make a left turn off a main road into the approach road. At the intersection was a sign reading "no left turn unstoned".

BINGO! Prankster humor at its best! Does it credit Kesey or only mention the sign?
(Sincere curiosity/book's at home/and willing to be corrected myself  )
We'll leave the Shelton contest open and award you the first brownie point.
Or would you prefer a nice bowl of venison chili?
BTW, Joe, you keepin' up with the veer, here?

I'm at two degrees. My limey friend in Ohio wrote his PhD dissertation on Kesey and the Pranksters. Had access to his personal files and library in Oregon (including letters between Kesey, Hunter S. Thompson, and Terry Gilliam about filming Fear and Loathing). He also has a small piece of the bus.

W-a-a-y cool! (seriously). Didn't know KEsey and Thopson wer acquainted.
I'd be very interested in his perception of the realtionship between Kesey and McMurtry, if he has any insights. I always kind of thought Kesey gave up, or at least changed his focus, after "Sometimes A Great Notion", and wondered if he was just leaving it up to the better man for the job, so to speak: McMurtry. We KNOW where that wound up. He's up there with Clemens in my opinion.
