Well, there were 102 lots in The Richard Gere Guitar Collection that sold at Christie's - one was the F50R NT which sold for $2375. 8) A '31 Martin D-28 sold for $62,500 (bought by C.F. Martin). The grand winner was a '60 Gibson Les Paul for $98,500 (wonder what a it cost new?). :)

Toni I hope you don't mind but here's a link to the article :D http://news.yahoo.com/richard-gere-guitar-collection-fetches-1m-nyc-023755579.html

Hey Joe-Christie's says the "Pretty Woman" star studied trumpet and is a self-taught pianist and guitarist. Oh boy self-taught....that's like a criminal trying to be his own attorney at trial isn't it?

I can't figure out whether you are endorsing or dissing self-taught guitarists but in case it is the latter, I'll bet the vast majority of people posting on LTG received their training by some means other than having someone give them lessons.

I guess I'm also self taught.
I learned to play right out of some John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot song books.
Or you could say that I was taught to play by John and Gordon.

I'll wait for clarification, but unless someone makes it big and makes lots of money from music, I'm used to hearing "self taught" as a disparaging term for someone who cannot read music, does some technical things "the wrong way" and has never had formal schooling on the instrument or paid a successful (or non-self taught) musician for lessons.

Well, formal piano training as a youngster. Then vocal and music theory training in college. With the guitar, it's all chord books and watching players I like and trying to figure it out on my own. So I guess you can paint me with the "self-taught" brush as well. Figuring out how to do things is part of the challenge. I never see "self-taught" as a bad thing. Some of my biggest guitar heroes are that.......

I'll not be defending myself in a legal battle, however. It's different. 8)

Self-taught is an interesting and relatively vague term. Many of the folk and blues singers of the '60s never had formal training, but they did run in circles that would share the guitar wealth. So if someone learned a new song or lick, then they would pay it forward and show all their friends. So is that still self taught?

One example is Dave Van Ronk, one of my guitar heros. According to his "autobiography" he never really had formal lessons, but did spend lots of time with Gary Davis (his guitar hero). DVR could not read tab or music and had his own notation that looked like math equations. Gary Davis was blind so he picked up everything by ear.

Another one of my guitar heros is Peppino D'Agostino. In interviews, he claims to have not had a single lesson and is self taught. His work is some of the most complex stuff I have heard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNWFCNAq0oA

I'm self-taught. Like Tom, I had piano lessons as a 'child'. :) Although my dad and several relatives played guitar, I opted to 'do-it-myself'. :) If the truth be known and knowing I'm only a simple picker and strummer, I'm sorta proud of that. AND, Richard Gere probably isn't the best guitar player, but he had the money and inclination to buy some very nice guitars (albeit he was heavy on the Gibson & Martin side). :) He bought what he liked.....don't we all! :D

Oh boy! Talk about open mouth and insert foot! Don't everybody pile on at once! I guess I asked for it.
In my mind when a well-known or "famous" person (for lack of a better term) uses the word self taught it always strikes me as arrogant. Like they were too smart to take a lesson, they never looked at a cheat sheet for chords or could hit a bar chord right off the bat. I happen to like Richard Gere, I think he is a great actor, however I've never heard, or heard of, his playing ability. Sounds to me like he needs money, maybe he should self teach some financial budgeting.

That was very nice. I'm pretty much self taught & if Peppino is self taught as well, I can only say he is a far better teacher than I am. :)

Yeah I understand the legal business isn't nearly as brutal as the music business.
I don't care if Mr. Gere taught himself or not. If it wasn't for the fact that several members here are serial Guild guitar owners, I'd call his decision to sell a Guild extremely gauche.
oh... I wonder if he's a member?

A good friend of mine attended the preview and the auction. He was interested in any number of things. I checked over the catalog and told him what I'd be looking at, had I the money. One was a '67 ES-335. He tried it out during the preview, had to have it and therefore did. He's a happy camper!

There were some rather interesting oddball amps in there. I stayed away, fearing for my financial well-being.
