Yesterday I got an offer from a LTG poster on a guitar I have listed here for sale.
The message to me was his first post on LTG.
He made an offer and said I'd be shipping the guitar to NYC.
Since I'm offering free shipping east of the Miss. I countered and said I'd have to be paid via the "no fee to me" option on Paypal. I gave him my Paypal ID for pmt.
Today I received an email accepting my offer but changed the ship to location to Los Angeles and said that he couldn't pay from Paypal unless I sent him a Paypal invoice.
I've been using Paypal since it started and never heard anything like this.

This is a scam, right?
Thanks for any help here.

I usually include the phrase “to LTG members in good standing” to any FS posts I make here. If it sounds fishy, and the cross country destination change is enough of a red flag by itself, there’s no obligation to go through with the deal. Better to walk away than to risk being out the guitar and the money.

Have him send you his phone number and talk to him. Get his shipping address and do some research to confirm the name, phone and address match up.

It could be he doesn’t have a Paypal account so needs an invoice sent? But that might not include using the family/friends method.

I have an issue with my PayPal account where the only way someone can pay me via PayPal is if I send him an invoice. I think that issue is pretty unique to my situation though.

These are both excellent suggestions! I have gotten to the point, especially with more expensive guitars, that I won't do the deal as either a buyer or seller unless I talk to the actual person over the phone, the old fashioned way. It gives you a feel for who you're dealing with far better than any text based medium, and these days, there seems to be an ever increasing number of people that refuse to communicate any other way than texting.

Scammers ask for an invoice to get your email address to send you fake paypal emails saying that they have paid when they have not. They hope you ship afterwards without verifying you actually received the money. So it could be a scam.

It could very well be a scam, but as a buyer I always ask for a PayPal invoice if that is how I am paying.

You just have to confirm that it is a legitimate invoice and not a fake one.

Sounds like a scam. I've had a similar response from an absolute new LTGer. Beware!

I will message you the other info. I don't want to post his ID here as the guy may be legit.
