That was great show! Lots of fond memories sitting around the old TV, getting up to change the stations, adjusting the antenna, etc. Those guys were cutting edge at the time!

As kids we listened to their albums. I think we had nearly every one. Then became fans anew when they got their own show. Thanks for posting that. (I had to go and watch a few more clips on YouTube).

My Mom used to get together with her sisters and play "Canasta' on whatever night the show regularly aired. So my cousins and I would gather in the TV room and watch the Smothers Brothers. No Dvds, Vcrs, and multiple channels back then. If you watched Tv , you watched what was on.
These guys held our attention alright. :D

I guess I'm forgetting something. Was it actually built as a "D50 Special" or some similar model name before it was formally called a D55?
Also I seem to recall a story involving one of Tommy's guitars and shoe polish being used for an emergency stain....?
Last, does anybody know if that's also the guitar he took to John and Yoko's Bed-in?

Thats interesting, Shoe polish eh? The look of his guitar is great but, in video ( to me at least) looks well older than it is. It doesnt have that new guitar 'shine' about it.
The bed-in Guitar? I've pondered the same ponder.

I discovered The Smothers Brothers through LTG shortly after I joined a couple of years ago. I love how they can perform a song with great respect musically but still have fun with it e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRuPIfs70rM

I love Tommy Smothers - so funny but he's a wonderful musician as well.

From the videos available of the Bed-In sing-a-long, it's hard to tell exactly what guitar Tommy is playing, at least the videos and photos I've seen.

He often has his back to the camera as he sits on the bed facing Lennon, who of course is facing the camera. And the people crowding around the whole scene makes it tricky to see.

Hmm. That may have been the first album of theirs we (ie my parents) bought. Someone in our family must still have it. My sister probably.
Then, you can always get a replacement CD:

Thanks Zelja
While I watched the TV show religously  I did not follow them much after that. Somehow I knew at the beginning of Tommy's instrumental break that "Dueling Banjos" was coming up.

Thanks John. Yep, those guys were great, helped a lot of careers (Steve Martin, Mason Williams, Glen Campbell & More) plus said the things that needed to be said at the time on TV, which so few were doing. Cost them their show.

Hello adorshki,

Haven't seen that many photos made during the occasion, but it seems to me that in this photo the guitar has a natural top ....

.... and it looks like it has dot inlays, so that would make it a D-40 or a D-50.

Sincerely,

Thanks Terry, Yes, I remember being pretty upset when they chopped that show. I have twin older brothers ( 15 years older than me) and they reminded me of my big brothers, all the joking and banter. It was a great show. So many great memories around that show and those characters and skits. Loved the music in it too! What a loss to have had it axed.
A great Doco, with those above mentioned folks is here:

"Smothered, The censorship struggles of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour." A great one to watch for the behind the scenes story, and show just how much these guys got up CBS's nose. :D
Shows how they stood up for Pete Seager too! His singing of the metaphoric, "Waist deep in the Big muddy, and the Big Fool says to push on" :D Gotta love it! What a time in history.

Nice photo, Hans! The woman next to shirtless Timothy Leary does not seem very happy...
