Hello to all.

On Sunday I was the high bidder on an X-170 at ebay. Earlier in the day I had played several of the NS archtops, but (and I hope not to offend anyone) I wasn't impressed by them. For close to the same price a used Guild was a very easy decision.

I've been taking lessons for about a year and am getting into jazz. On my lesson on Monday I told my teacher about the X-170, and he said that his first archtop was an X-175. So of course that made me feel good.

I'm happy to be getting a Guild. This will be my second (although I sold the first). I had a JF-30 12-string for back in the early 2000s, which was a great guitar. Also I had a Dearmond X-155 (I think that's the number) briefly. My best childhood friend had a Guild dread back in college (he went to the University of Rhode Island :)) in the late 70s/early 80s and we played together a bit and I admired his guitar.

It should arrive by next Monday and I'm quite excited. (Also getting obsessed thinking about pickup swaps.)

Welcome to the forum! That's a nice guitar you are getting! Should have the hb-1s, so I wouldn't be too hasty about swapping the pups until you hear them.

Welcome to LTG! Nice introduction, looking forward to seeing pictures once it arrives! Regarding the pickups it depends what year she is from. The X-170 was introduced first in 1985 and discontinued 2003 according Gruhn's book.

Thanks!

I just found it it's being delivered today! woo-hoo!

I do think it has the Fender pu's, rather than the HB-1s/SD-1, based on the mounting screw spacing. But what do I know? ;)

They should be the HB-1s, mine were. A pic will clear things up.

Congrats on a great Guitar Purchase and Let Me say Welcome to LTG! X-170's are great guitars and very versitile. I have done some pickup swaps in some of my Fender pickup equipped Guilds but if your guitar has Original HB-1's in it, That is about as good as you can get. If it does have the original HB-1's in it and you don't like the sound, I am sure you would be able to sell them here on the forum to finance whatever pickups you do want without any problem. Lots of great folks here with lots of great info. Best of luck to you and Look forward to seeing pics when it arrives!

Beautiful guitar. I do love mine. From looking at the pickups, I would say that they are probably the Fender HB-1 not the original HB-1s. That would probably mean that it is not a 1997 as those should have the Seymour Duncan made SD-1, a very nice pickup. Mine is later than 1997 according to Guild's charts and it came with the SD-1s. Great get and let us know how you like it when it gets here.

I bought it knowing that the PUs are probably the Fenders and taking that into account as to how much I would bid. I did ask the seller if he knew, and he replied that he did not and I thought he was sincere.

It's all good.

Now time to go home, eat dinner, do the dishes, and play!

Hey, RG,

You mentioned you briefly had a Dearmond X-***. What prompted your parting with it, if I might ask?

I'm sure you will love the new Guild. Even with the Fender pickups. That said, I have a blonde X-170T and have some Lindy Fralin PAF humbuckers that I will be installing soon. I'll report back later. Enjoy your new guitar! Congrats!

Nice guitar! Congratulations. According to the serial number it is definitely not a 1997 one. (Assuming the sometimes incorrect S/N list is correct for that model). I would guess your guitar is from 1998 but don't know how many were made in 1998, so it could even be a 1999. And yes, those are the Fender made humbuckers, another hint is that the neck pickup ring is mounted 180deg wrong, normally the two height/tilt adjustment screws are on the bass side for both pickups and that "wrong" way to mount the humbucker is possible for the Fender made one.

That guitar LOOKS awesome !

Thanks! It really looks and feels like a guitar which was bought in the late 90s, played a little, and then put back into it's case and forgotten about since.

I actually hope it turns out to have been made in 1998 -- that's the year my son was born, and I hope that someday (a long time from now) this can be his birth year guitar. Now, maybe I should start looking for a 1959 335? ;)

I played it last night through my 2 amps. First a simple little 6 watt 10"er, and it was just fantastic. That's when I made my posts last night. Afterwards, I played through my 20 watt 1x12, and it was much too boomy. Then lying in bed I remembered that that amp was dialed in for my Tele -- obvisously the amp's settings for the Tele won't match up for this guitar's needs. So I'm optimistic that tonight I'll be enjoying the 170 thorugh both amps.

It came strung with Chrome 10s. I've ordered a set of TI flats and a set of Pyramids flats. Looking forward to that. I've played TIs before on an Epi Dot and loved them. Haven't tried Pyramids yet. I will keep 10s on these for now; perhaps when I change PUs I'll consider going to a larger gauge.

I'll probably replace the pickups but not for a while. (At least need to wait long enough to explian to my wife why I am already replacing somehting on my new guitar.)

Thanks again for all of the welcoming posts. I have to say that all of the informative and good natured posts that I read prior to getting this guitar made me want to get a Guild again and be part of this community.
