From what I've read I'm leaning toward Seth Lovers.

Excellent choice! Based on the serial number I am guessing your guitar to be 2000, but only Hans would know for sure. I have had two X-170's and one X-170T over the years. One late 80's model with HB-1's and the other two late 90's/early 00's with other pups. I liked the pickups on all three, but I think the Seth Lovers would be killer on this guitar. Keep us posted, and enjoy that new guitar of yours.

Well that didn't take too long I've ordered a set of Seth Lovers. :)
And TI flat 12s.
In the meantime this is a wonderful and surprisingly comfortable guitar.

Gigged with my X-170 for the first time last night as part of the contra dance big band I play with, based in Princeton, NJ. I ran it though a Tech 21 Sansamp DI Driver and then out (a) via XLR to the PA mixer and also (b) to a small amp as a personal moniter.

I had to turn the bass way down on the DI -- it was quite boomy! Once I had it dialed in I had alot of fun and even got a couple of duets accompanying on the bass part (there was no bass player last night). After the dance I shared it with one of other muscians (who is quite accomplished and a multi-instrumentalist) and his immediate reaction was "It's a Guild!" :)

I am looking fowared to installing the Seth Lovers. Anyone know a good tech in Philly/South Jersey? The guy I've happily used in Philly (where I work) for about 10 years recently moved about an hour from me.

Pete Brown at South Jersey Guitar Repair in Collingswood NJ is top notch but usually pretty busy, so expect a bit more of a wait. Pete's also a big Guild fan. There's always Bluebond Music down off of South Street. I've been using Richboro Music the last couple of times and Kevin Coyle, who is also the owner does very good work and customer service is really excellent (might be way too far for you though).

Thanks!

Did Kevin used to work at Medley Music in Bryn Mawr? (that's where I bought my JF-30-12 in early 00s)

Edited: I just checked out Richboro's FB page and I like what I see. I'll take a trip there -- and I may have Kevin also do a set up and maybe a new nut on my son's MIM Tele.

Thanks again.

Kevin's father (who still works at the shop) managed Cintioli's way back when. I doubt that Kevin ever worked anywhere else but Richboro Music (he's also relatively young...well compared to me anyway) at least I don't recall him working at Medley (boy do I miss shops like Medley).

Yes, I know Medley had a mixed reputation, but I liked it.

But my favorite shop is Mandolin Bros. on Staten Island. It's sad how they are winding down after the passing of its proprietor.

Medley had a great selection.....Gibson, Fender, Martin, Hamer, Yamaha, and plenty of Guilds. Toward the end they were only still an authorized Fender dealer and were just stocking some smaller "boutique" stuff like Suhr and used stuff.
Never used their repair services. At one point (early to mid 90's) they were subbing out all their repair work to Bluebond (Dale Bluebond was still living at the time). I really miss all the old independent dealers in the Philly area: 8th St Music, Medley,
Zaphs, and Cintioli's. They were all Guild dealers also. Nothing like Mandolin Bros though, that place was in its own stratosphere. I hope they don't fade away like the others (or become a Guitar Center like West LA Music). I think we've turned this thread into a Philly/South Jersey guitar shop lament.:sour:

I had the Seth Lovers installed a few weeks ago and I'm quite pleased with them. Much clearer and not boomy. Also I was very happy with Richboro Music (thank you Guildadelphia for the recommendation) - I had them do some work on my Tele and my son's Tele.

Sorry no pics or clips that's beyond me. :)

Does anyone want the stock pickups? I'd be happy to send them to another LTGer for $20 for the pair (including shipping).

Sure there's nobody I'd rather send them to.

Hans you can have them for the cost of shipping.

Glad to hear that you had a good experience with Richboro Music and the Seth Lovers are working for you. Both your guitars look great. Kevin Coyle is a pleasure to do business with.

Congrats on your new guitar, RG2002. By the way, I'm one of those people who just recently got a NS arch-top, but it was the thin-line, fully hollow Starfire III.

When I shopped for mine in Tokyo last week, I also got a chance to play an older 1990s Corona/Westerly Re-issue. It had the HB-1's, but frankly although the craftsmanship was quite good, sound-wise I preferred the tone of the LB-1's on the more recent NS series.

Plus, I actually paid close to US$900 for the NS SFIII, and for not so much more money was able to acquire a brand new Mono hybrid travel gig-bag, made for short or direct distance gigs or traveling. While the NS SFIII is still "stock", as an all-around guitar for rock, blues, and mod-beat needs; I can see myself through time eventually modding or upgrading some components to get it up to my "personal snuff".

Why? Well, I could just as well as easily wait for and bid on a vintage Hoboken Guild SFIII, but even if I did have the money to chalk up for a vintage piece, I'd be almost scared as heck to gig out with it. If it were ever lost, stolen or damaged, I'm afraid chances of me bumping into another one would be very slim...maybe take me a long time to find another exact replacement...which is why (for my personal preference) it would be more economical to use a new model as a good foundation tool, and upgrade or mod-to-taste as necessary.

Would've Guild Custom Shop re-issue the SFIII, I would've saved and waited, but I chose not to and play sooner.

Anyway, enough of my rant, and want to say once again congrats on your new Guild, and hope the X-170 will bring you great sounds and tones!

Cheers!
