What is it that draws you to Guild guitars?

Reason 1: 25-ish years ago when I decided I was going to buy my first decent American made guitar, a very knowledgeable friend suggested Guild as the best value and therefore smartest choices. I played a DCE1 head to head with a Martin DC1 and went with Guild.

Reason 2: Rhode Island. At some point in the process, I looked at the label inside that DCE1 and went, "Wait, what?" I grew up (and now once again live) 45 minutes from Westerly. We went there all the time. To the beach. To the go-kart track. To the paddle boats.

Even now I find that I can usually find a better deal on a Guild than another American made guitar. That M40 I picked up used a couple of weeks back, cost me $1300 shipped. A similar Martin would be upwards of $2000.
I lived in Newport from age 12-27 or so.
I lived in Providence too for a year or 2.

Because, as do Gillette Blue Blades, they allow one to:

"Look Sharp. Feel Sharp. Be Sharp."

(that should separate the "merely old guys" from the "truly ancient guys")

Ancient here. The Friday Night Fights (boxing) sponsor.

Don't forget Pabst Blue Ribbon, and Hamms

What drew me to Guild was walking into a little music store and seeing AE-176 hanging on the wall. It's still the most fun musical instrument I've ever played.

AS I recall back in the day, good music stores usually only had good guitars. In 1980 I walked in with 1000.00 on me and started picking up the Gibsons and Martins. The price tags were over my head. And there down below was this beautiful dark 1980 sunburst D25. Picked it up and loved the deep warm tone and complimenting soft high end. That's the one for me. It made me not want to put it down. Ehat a bargin compared to the others.

And terribly rare as well! (y)

I didn't realize you'd bought that beauty new, Brad. What's in the stable these days?

D 40s for + or- $1k? I live on a different planet.
They do sell for $900 - 1400 on reverb, many in the higher range but the average Facebook marketplace or craigslist D-40 that's near mint is often under $1. It's probably a New England/NY pricing vs California thing, the guitar market is mad depressed up here. I could probably buy a large number of the used guitars at my favorite guitar store within a reasonable drive and eventually sell them for more on reverb - they also price their stuff lower than many places as well. I have actually never played an Oxnard D-40 because there's one store in 100 miles that carries higher end Guilds and they used to always at least carry a D-55 but lately the only US Guild has been the M-20.

I dunno, CA to CT is a huge step down imo.

I’m drawn to Guilds for the look and tone, playability, 12 string godliness, and the resilience of the company itself.

Oh and I only just heard of Hamm’s, figured it wasn’t that good because they advertised a suitcase for $20, and I was right, it’s not that good, worse than PBR, has a taste like Old Milwaukee or Milwaukees Best which I haven’t had or seen since college in the 80s. Retro packaging was mainly why I splurged on it lol

"From the land of sky blue waters"

Based on my experience with Hamm's they certainly didn't use that water to make the beer.
