I'm letting Doc use it for a while and as long as he's happy, I'm happy.

For me, I have to go with my D-55, "The Flagship OF Guild Guitars".

I was looking for a guitar to accompany my vocals and the D-55 is the perfect guitar for that.
It's deep rich bass and ballanced trebles and mids make the D-55 the ideal backup guitar.

I had a JF-55 before the D-55 and for what I needed in a guitar, the D-55 was the best choice.

I have also owned a D-25-12 and a JF-30-12.
Both were great 12 string guitars but to be truthful, neither saw a lot of playing time with me.
For my taste, 12 strings are too busy to be use as a vocal back up.
Yew, there are some exceptions to this but for most of my songs, the D-55 is the quintessential guitar.

My (slightly different) take:

Quintessential Dread - The D50 that I've owned since new, and my "lifer" (pics soon)
Quinessential Jumbo - my F50R
Quintessential 12er - my D25-12 in a lovely Tobacco Burst

The thing is with Guilds is that they're basically all good. You can't go too far wrong no matter what you buy. 8)

By common agreement then, it seems the quintessential Guilds are the ones that say "Guild" on the headstock....

True enough, but beware, a lot of them don't have enough strangs!

Of course I am biased as the DV-52 is the only Guild I have so far...... Don't see that lasting very long

Hi and welcome!

Also, one of the best bargains in the world of rosewood/spruce dreadnaughts is the DV-52 built only in Westerly, RI. These are two very similar guitars in materials, construction, and tone.
!
I concur about the DV52 (though mine was not inexpensive). However, my D30 (Dread w/ maple back and sides) is the ballsiest, deepest MF I own. I think we all agree that "ballsy" and "deep" define Guild pretty well. I paid 500.00 for that guitar. Go figure....

That's an archback, right? I can imagine. Prob'ly sounds like what you'd get if you mated a D25 with an F65ce. I think I better put 'em in the same cage and keep my fingers crossed. (See my sig)

I will jump in here after owning many a Guild. The quintessential Guild for me is my '73 F50R. I have had F50's, F50R from Tacoma, D55's from Westerly and Corona, I still have a Hoboken D40 keeper, but not on the same level as the 73 F50R, I have had DV 52 and D 50 and F40 and M20, plus several 12 strings. The 73 F50R is the keeper.

That doesn't count the Carlo Greco handmande rosewood dred that supplanted all the other Guild dreds in the decision making process.

Gotta ride along with the D-25M. Great guitars and lots of them out there to choose from. Often available at "import" prices, too.

Since the original post is about the "quintessential" Guild, to my mind that would rule out dreadnoughts. I love Guild dreadnoughts and I own a D50, but the square shouldered dreadnought design is really a Martin design.

I've never even played one but I've always thought of the F50 as the quintessential Guild guitar. Introduced in 1954 and really a uniquely Guild design.

I've always loved dreadnoughts myself (and a Guild one, at that), that is, until I played a Guild jumbo. Now there's no looking back... the dread shape just feels so "common" now. :)

Like it or not, I have to say D-25. Those blonde F-50s are the bomb, though!

I have to go with the F series- F-30 and F-40 primarily as that is where the flat tops started, and it differentiated them from Martin.
While Guild has made a large number of D guitars I think it is the curvy grand orchestra and jumbo bodies that really mark a Guild from across the room.
