What is the quintessential Guild?

Also NOT a quintessential acoustic comment, but my Starfire IV beat the pants off half a dozen ES335's I auditioned before I bought it.

The quintessential Guild for you is the one that pleases you the most. Statistically, the most Guild-like Guild would be a big 12-string or a D-40/50, with the F-40/50/30 models close behind--those are the models that I have noticed most over the last 40-plus years in the hands of pros, while at jams the D models (particularly the D-35) have been the overwhelming favorites. The company sold thousands of M-20s, but I have observed only a handful in the wild--they were student guitars, and I suspect a lot of those students lost interest around 1975 or so, and the guitars wound up in the basement or the closet.

The testimony on this thread demonstrates that the choice of personal-quintessential is all over the map--my own is any pre-1970 model, and specifically the 1965 D-40 I bought new. But that's just me. Your ears and fingers will tell you what yours is. What happens here is just a bunch of guys sharing pictures of their kids and pets.

I would go with an F-50, either maple or rosewood. But, I think when most guitarists think of Guild (outside of the initiated into the family), they think first of 12 strings, especially the F styles.

I am guessing a jumbo of some sorts. Perhaps the answer will provide some direction for me. I suppose that my real question is, what would be a good guitar to accompany a singer (me) and I play/strum with bare fingers 90% of the time. Thanks.
HI Turtle, WELCOME ABOARD!
If you wanna go by sheer production numbers, Guild has built more D25s than any other model, and there's a LOT of D25 love around here. Personal suggestion would be from late '90's production, because that's what I have and it's the one most compatible with barebackin' out of my 3 Guilds. Almost like a flamenco tension with the snap of steel. I use the .012 lights.
Caution: the guitar could easily overpower a quiet singer. I can sing pretty loud, but I can also play pretty soft. The '25 also has the most flexibility for that out of the 3.
I think the other truly "quintessential" Guild would be the one Richie Havens opened Woodstock with: the D40.
Anyway, just my .02 :D

For me it would be the F series, because they've been in production the longest and are the guitars that first established Guild's reputation for flattops. Second up, of course, are the 12 stringers, particularly the large bodied jumbos.

It's a gimme: The DV-52. As it epitomizes the Guild enigmatic charm, of balance between quality and affordability.
Or at least what used to be the Guild enigmatic charm.....
I don't know.... what do you guys think about the new Guilds prices? (ducking)

Oh.... and TF is right on the 'lectric side.

I like my F30 and many here like their dreads, but lets face it, Martin already had the market on these models. We all acknowledge it by continually qualifying our guitars by saying "this dread was able to hold its own against all the Martins in the room." To me that says it is a good guitar but not Guild's quintessential guitar. The Guild jumbo is THE Guild guitar that defined jumbo. The Guild jumbo (either 6 or 12-string) is the guitar that other companies try to mimic. Just look at Martin's recent development of the Grand J-35.

F20, F30, F40, F47 - Guild continued to build mini Jumbos while other companies were concentrating mostly on Dreads and full-size Jumbos - is my very biased-by-my personal taste reply..

The D25M!
Come to think of it, and given the number of Guild lovers having been infatuated by means of a D25, I have to say Mojo might be onto something here (and regardless of the finish)....

Sorry for having overlooked your post Al. I promise it won't happen again.....

Wow! I never really thought of Guilds as dreadnaught guitars! I remember the F 50 on the cover of some John Denver album when I was little so I always thought of Guilds as jumbo guitars. It looks like I sorely underestimated the breadth and depth of Guild guitars! It looks like I have got my work cut out for me.

By the way, thank you for all the replies and the kind welcomes. I believe, from reading all of the comments, that to have the "quintessential" Guild I will need to purchase around two dozen guitars  and that should just about do it? Well it sounds like I'll have to spend some time at a shop that sells Guilds.

My take:
Quintessential Dread - D25M
Quinessential Jumbo - F50
Quintessential 12 - F512NT

Having said that, my inner GAS is pointing me to a D55 and an F412 :D

In all humility all the junbo love caught me by surprise and I can't argue with it. So I really was just throwing out that technicality of "by the numbers...it's the D25". But thanks for the hollaback! :)
