There are enough trademark "Guild" features to suggest that it is a Guild... probably a D-35. But the headstock was definitely later... probably after a re-fin.

It certainly could be. Seller already indicates the braces were scalloped, but oddly doesn't mention the headstock re-do.

I think it IS a D-35. Headstock shape, pickguard, bridge, and binding are all right for a D-35... Just modded...

The guitar is a D4-12, but what's with THIS headstock.

If I may be so bold as to speculate on the 12 string. It may be a typical 3 piece headstock without the plastic veneer and with a refinish. The maple? strip seems a bit wide, but that would be my guess. The alleged D35 looks like it may also be a refin, with an attempt at the newer Guild G logo placed on the headstock after the finish job....again, just a guess.

With the added benefit of having the guitar in hand, I can say that the head is solid mahogany, as you can see on the backside.

I think a previous owner removed the Guild logo/plastic veneer and simply masked in a center stripe and painted the rest of the head black.

I'd like to find a Guild overlay someplace, someday..... 8)

Guitar sounds great, BTW!

Yeah, Joe... Yours is just missing a faceplate (as you know) with creative coloring -- probably to make the "wings" invisible. As for the craigslist git... It's suspicious precisely because of the overlay (or inlaid G).

But, I agree, it's probably just a modded Guild.

[edit: Joe, looking closely at your picture, does your D4 have wings? I think it should, but the matching looks very close if so.]

For your amusement, this 70's JS II bass has had the inlay removed and clearly shows the three piece neck. However, the back of the neck also clearly shows the three pieces.

I'm saying its got a whole new neck, based on several things.

Incorrect headstock 'crown' angles, incorrect sizing of 'G', totally wrong TRC.

Body-wise, the bridge, soundhole, and pickguard all look legit.

I think this thing had some neck damage (or maybe a very badly warped neck) and it was all replaced.

Hey Steffan, I'm new to Guilds so what does TRC stand for?
HI Turtle, it's also kind of a running joke here 'cause we see so many of 'em that have had teh TRC put on upside down, probably 'cause it resembles Gibson's orientation. It's also a dead giveaway someone's had it off at some point for whatever reason.
AS for the guitar in the ad, one thing I'm gonna point out just from the standpoint of sheer detective work is that we're all assuming the headstock pictured is attached to the guitar pictured, and it's a pretty good assumption, but until we see a picture of the whole guitar, it is in fact possible that the headstock pictured is not actually on the guitar for sale. We've seen stranger things, like pictures lifted from the internet of guitars that aren't actually the guitar being offered. Just sayin'.

Awww man. Here I was thinking it was just a little fishy but you have just blown my mind. You are absolutely correct! I had never, even for a moment, considered what you stated but it could easily be true. However, for $800 for that thing I will never find out. Who trims the internal bracing of a guitar AFTER it is built?!
