Walrus, I'm at an impasse with this one. They both have their qualities without any detractions, both showing the qualities of each performer I remember them both from the 1990's when TNN was on cable tv and they were on various segments.
Is that an Autoharp on the Crowell recording? I haven't heard one for a long time.

If you mean under the verse, that's a small bodied guitar I assume, Crowell's usual instrument these days. If you mean the solo, I assume it's either a banjo or mandolin.

Yes, I was referring about the light sounding stringed instrument that is used right from the beginning of the recording. It just seems very light like an autoharp being played with a felt pick. Thanks for your insight walrus. I'm going to look up some autoharp recordings to retune my hearing. (y)🦻

Live version below. No pick by Crowell contributes to the "light" sound, perhaps...

That's another really tough one, @walrus !! I'm a huge Townes fan. Such a talented and troubled artist and he's written so many truly amazing songs. But as tough as it was, I'm gonna give the edge to Townes on this one. There's something brutally simple and haunting about it. Both amazing versions of an incredible song!! (y)(y)

Okay here's one.... both amazing... I'm just not sure. You tell me....

This is a really tough one for me.... I love Shawn but I think the original artist nailed it....

In this case, I concur with those who voted for the original. It's Shawn Colvin, after all...

The funny thing is that for true die-hard, hardcore Townes fans, that track--which I think is pared down and just lovely--is from
one of his albums that the die-hards consider "over-produced" and not representative of who he really was.
I don't agree with that BTW--for example I think this cute of Flyin' Shoes is brilliant:

The first time I heard Alison Krause's version of "Baby, Now That I've Found You" it made my hair stand up. What a version.

How about:

The cover version is from the wonderful (and sad) Fountains of Wayne tribute album, Saving For A Custom Van, released after the death of Adam Schlesigner from COVID complications.

A nice song to play, too.

Rodney Dangerfield said to an airline clerk, "I want a ticket to LA, and I want to send my luggage to Peru."

The clerk said, "Mister Dangerfield, we can't do that!"

Rodney said, "Why not? You did it last time!"

Definitely the original Muskrat Love. Even America's version isn't as good, though better than the C&T version.

Well, the original is Robert Earl Keen, who wrote it! Shawn did her cover version much later. Is that what you meant??

Gah! I meant I liked the Colvin version better, but articulated it like a drunken sailor! Thanks for the correction!

Okay I hope this isn't a repeat.... HOOO boy!!

Or... maybe this one?
Such a great song, and two great versions by equally great artists, both sadly gone too young.
Maybe a tiny edge to Ms Wolf as the author, but--jeez--Nancy Griffith?
Gotta love both.
I have performed this song too, with an acoustic vocal duo, and it is a great song to play--the mark of a great tune, it just falls to hand and voice.
