One of the best shows I've seen back in the day, opening act the James Cotton Blues Band. J. Geils just blew it out!
One of my best shows too. Ian Hunter opened. Missed most of his set unfortunately but what we did catch he was awesome as well.

I have vote J Geils Band, this tune seems to define energy!

Between the Nice or ELP on Hang On To A Dream, cannot separate the two into "best," both are great versions.

Angel of the morning... Very, very different styles. Personally, I'm totally on the fence.

Juice Newton (original)

"Angel" by Shaggy... I'm not sure how he got away with the rename...

Not even close for me...

JUICE!
I like the reggae feel of Shaggy's version though, Bill. Of course, Juice was way easier on the eyes. :)

I'm wondering if this isn't really a "cover" since Shaggy changed the lyrics (... angel, you're my darling... closer than my peeps...)

Sirkku and I always talked about taking in one of these shows, but never did it. We DID see Garrison Kiellor in Worcester
though, I think it was before his controversy...

DID get to see Aoife with Julian Lange and "Critter" in Turner's Falls, at a nice small venue (restored theater) as luck would have it, great show.
Having bought a couple of her records, I think she is better live than on vinyl...

It was the only "Live From Here" that I got to see live, and I think my keister still hurts from the incredibly uncomfortable balcony seats at Town Hall, but boy was it ever worth it!

I really miss that show.

Juice Newton all the way! A song on the radio all the time in my younger days...

Hey Shaggy! Try writing your own songs!

Have to agree. I saw them late 70’s with James Montgomery. They absolutely killed it. One of the most energetic shows ever. They knew how to engage and audience for sure.

Well, Juice didn't write the song either! It was penned by the great Chip Taylor, who also wrote "Wild Thing", amongst others. The first recorded release was by Evie Sands in 1967, and I'd say it's pretty good.

When we're talking hip-hop and rap versions in which 'older' songs are incorporated, we're actually looking at a totally different category of 'covers'. Stevie Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' and Coolio's 'Gangsta's Paradise' are good examples and you can't really compare them!

You're right, Hans.

The hook in Shaggy's hip-hop version is clearly "Angel of the Morning" even if the piece itself is very different. That's kind of what I meant earlier. But you're right about it being a different category of a cover.

Though it seems to me we can compare them though even if we don't call them covers. I guess a huge style difference makes for an interesting comparison, whether it's a direct cover or something else. I realize there's a lot of this in hip-hop, so maybe it's too wide a subject to invite general comparison.

If nothing else, it's interesting!
