My '62 Manhattan was built in Hoboken under the direction of Carlo Greco - brother of Juliette Greco, the French actress-singer. When a volcanic eruption took out the Hoboken plant, and Guild moved to Waverly, Greco moved to Japan, where he started the Greco guitar brand with a loan from his famous french sister.
Bwahahahahahaha!!!!! Love it, Walter!

After a hurricane took out Westerly plant, Gibson purchased Guild and moved all production to Nazareth, PA.
Most Guilds built in the late 80s and probably all the 90s, are actually Martin guitars. Only 1960 and 1970 (thru 1983) Guild acoustics are authentic. Buy my BR while you have a chance.

Well, the ad is partially right in that a guitar made in 2000 was likely built in Corona, California.
Hi Richard, sorry, no flattops built in Corona until mid '01 at earliest, and those would have been the pre-production "trial/practice" pieces.
First Corona model year is actually '02. ;)

But the TRC's not original.

The label says made in westerly RI and from what I’ve read, it seems production started in Corona in 2001(?) and I don’t believe they used westerly labels in Corona like they did in the move to Westerly with Hoboken labels

Correct on both counts. (Electrics were being built in Corona before flattops in '01. I don't recall ever seeing confirmation that any flattops made in Corona '01 were "ready for market", as opposed to the "trial runs", but it seems reasonable. Technically first "official" year for Corona is '02.)

Being a lover of pre 20th Century American history what I'd like to know is why Hans has never covered the pre-NYC period of Guild production. Perhaps Volume 1/2?

I had to look up Hurricane Bob to make sure it even existed. You see, here in Florida if a Hurricane misses us, it really doesn't exist. ;)
Hehehe... Totally get it, Uke! Your point of view with hurricanes is reminiscent of that Steinberg drawing of New York City that was in New Yorker magazine... If it doesn't happen in New York, it doesn't happen. :D

Edit: Seriously, though, hurricane Bob was a real mess up here along the coast. Whether or not it kicked Westerly, RI's butt I don't know, but it certainly didn't destroy the Guild shop.

Funny, I looked it up too. My BS sensor went off 'cause I didn't think they were even naming storms after males yet at the time. But it's confirmed, and Westerly appears to be ideally situated to have been hit very very hard, especially with that river so close and running right through town.

That made me vaguely remember a story one of the Westerly guys told ages ago about a storm that did threaten the plant, and couldn't get to work? Don't recall if actual flooding in the plant occurred, but think that only happened to the Nashville Custom Shop, either shortly before or just after the close?.

@twocorgis might recall that one as I think his D50 narrowly avoided getting caught up in it?

Then there's another poster in which a view from the window on the westside of NYC towards New Jersey only "sees" the West Coast, LA, etc.

If you want to get that authentic Nick Drake sound, you need to buy my rare vintage Guild M-20 - THE Nick Drake guitar. This particular one is said to have been owned by a close childhood friend of Nick, and has soaked up his cosmic essence which will be imparted directly to your finger tips the moment your hands touch the stings. Now on sale as after 3 years it has not been able to mate with its true spiritual future owner. Is that you?
