pictures here of its original condition.... viewtopic.php?f=15&t=26917&start=15

I'm thinking of painting the neck, back, and sides black, or red or white, and leaving the top natural maple....opinions? I found all three colors in lacquer...my 1st attempt at this kind of thing...looks like I can end up with an invisible repair...happy happy Steffan

Hi Steffan; looking pretty good there at the snap/fix!

The only suggestion I have about lacquering in solid colors would be to wait until you could see how nice you could get the top to look; if it can be made to look spiffy in the natural, any color ... white ... red would look great. If the top won't come around, then I'd consider lacquering all of it. As far as a black neck v. colored body ... I bid 2 No Trump.

Good luck with your project!

Thanks guys...I know that has something to do with Bridge Capn but I don't know the game. Are you saying to just do the neck black, or don't?
The nice thing is I can keep on this project without having it unplayable. until the top is ready to do...Yeah I'm kinda impressed so far as to how its going to look, and this thing sounds great.....Steffan

No Steffan; I was saying I don't have a strong feeling one way or the other about painting the neck.

Yes, it's a bridge term but I don't know what it means. One 'No Trump' sounds like bidding nothing: "I bid nothing .. but I'm only bidding nothing once"

So ... I was doubling the bid. :D

I guess if the neck is really burfed up and no amount of effort is going to make it look attractive ... I guess that means paint.

Its really the only way to hide the repair John. It has white binding down the side of the neck and top. The top with the Guild logo has shrunk a little bit, so I could fill around it a bit and with the black lacquer would look ok,...The other option is to have the black come down to a point like that lovely maple DV72 that just found a new home...painting it white would subdue the binding quite a bit but that would be ok too...white with natural top would look pretty darn good, so would red, or black......I bid 2 no trump......Steffan

... or green

Yes, bringing the black on on the back of the peghead to a 'widow's peak' at the volute would be pretty neat and a color other than white would preserve the contrast and interest offered by the neck binding.

I'm changing my bid to one Spade.

I remberber seeing a green starfire, in about 1970, could have bought it cheap but the guy had lifted it from a music store, and I didn't want a hot guitar....sure was pretty though...unfortunately Lacquer in spray cans or colors seems very limited and I haven't seen green, maybe you can order it from specialty places, but for hiding flaws and just the macho vibe I'm thinking black too...with a natural top....gonna be sweet....Always wanted a starfire, but this sweetheart has scratched that itch...Steffan

Yes ... you're right .... you don't see many of those macho leather vests in green ... mostly black. Black with a natural top ... that gets my vote 8)

Ok, John....I'm on it.....also the binding is a bit pulled away on one side of the waist ....what I'm going to do for a clamp is to use two large tin cans, like tomato juice cans and run a rope through them and use a stick to form a type of turnbuckle ...the curve of the cans is about right to fit in the curve...now with a bit of white glue and a hairdryer to soften up the plastic....should work fine....I apparently don't have a well stocked workshop, or a workshop.....Steffan

I'm glad to hear that you don't let a little thing like that stop you! Spoken like a true Red Green fan. :D

I remember as a kid using tin cans and string to make walkie-talkies.

It seemed to me if you spoke loud enough, the other guy could hear you pretty clearly ... especially since they were about 15' away ... :D

You've come a long way since then......By the way kids are using string free cans these days....progress never ceases to amaze me.....neither does congress (the opposite of progress) but that's another story....
and now I can't watch my rabbit ears powered tv without having to subscribe to a provider or buy a decoder box for a hundred bucks..going digital isn't always an improvement...records still sound better than cds to me too......sheesh....!

One day, yous Canucquois will be a dumb as us down here. We be on digital TV in south FL ... 3-D, HD, blah blah.

Before digital, during storm-cause power outages, the stations put out analog signal using backup generators. Now, thanks to the dominant interests of cable, we have digital signal.

But if the power is out, so is the cable which depends upon grid power.

If the cable is out, there's no digital signal.

"Not every shot lands on the green" (Bobby Jones, famous golfer and telephonist) Realizing the short-comings of the string and cans, my brothers and I went back to just yelling at each other. :D

That guitar is looking great Steffan! I prefer a darker red but that's just my preference....the color you chose looks mighty fine. I am amazed at what you have done with that guitar! I'll see your spade and bid one heart.

Thanks 12....Rust-oleum red lacquer in a spray can...who'd a thunk.....looks pretty good in person...I used 600 to take the shine off, now looks like old semi gloss...filled in a few nicks and glues some of the veneer down with crazy glue jell....

It's amazing what you can do with some paint and crazy glue! Crazy glue has been one of the most useful inventions for guitar repair.
How much more work is there to do?

I keep wanting to play it so I haven't even done any of the work without strings....but I guess the tuners have to come off, glue on the headstock veneer, get the harp tailpiece re-plated. This thing has such a rich and vintage tone, unlike anything I've had before...I like it a lot...maybe there is a stain that can darken the red a bit, but if not so what it looks great....lets see...if I charge myself enough to do the work, would that add value to the guitar too? Steffan
...by the way I'm coming to Toronto on Oct 4, except for the Guild factory tour, I'll be around till the 18th. we should meet...
