The color in real life is very close to the color of fresh blood.......could use some toning down.....

Wow, really? That color doesn't come through on those pictures at all. You could always put a toner in the lacquer over top as well, right?

Colored lacquer is hard to come by, these are in a spray can and only in white, black and red, that I've found...perhaps a rub on rub off stain gel would work on lacquer, I guess they are oil based, paint thinner to remove it...what do you think Tom...maybe I'll try it on a scrap piece of maple and see what it looks like....Steffan

I'd be a little leery of mixing types of bases. Lacquer should stick to most anything but.... I wouldn't want it to mess up the adherence by applying something else. It would effect the overall way the lacquer works. Lacquer is it's own solvent. When you spray lacquer over lacquer it dissolves the existing lacquer enough to form one layer, which is why lacquer chips off as one piece. Poly forms layers. Lacquer melts into itself.

If you like the color or can live with it, I'd just stick with that.

I keep wanting to play it so I haven't even done any of the work without strings....but I guess the tuners have to come off, glue on the headstock veneer, get the harp tailpiece re-plated. This thing has such a rich and vintage tone, unlike anything I've had before...I like it a lot...maybe there is a stain that can darken the red a bit, but if not so what it looks great....lets see...if I charge myself enough to do the work, would that add value to the guitar too? Steffan...
Yep should be worth a smal fortune if you charge for all the elbow grease

...by the way I'm coming to Toronto on Oct 4, except for the Guild factory tour, I'll be around till the 18th. we should meet...
Steffan it would be great to see you....I can't offer a place to sleep as Janice is highly allergic to all types of fragrances, sunscreen, fabric softener....you name it, so nothing scented can come in to the apartment (including guitars  )...hence we lead a fairly secluded lifestyle...but I could meet with you anywhere....are you flying or driving? Would love to play some tunes with you and show you around.

I like it a lot! That's an awesome guitar you have there Steffan and I can completely understand you wanting to play it so much that fixin it is secondary. As long as the tuners hold I say play that thing! Tuners are a quick fix anyhow if you are replacing them. Plating the tailpiece is where I would draw the line for a while...at least until I had some good play time with it and have another electric around to play until the tailpiece comes back from the platers. I mean...I'm just sayin
