Can something really be called NOS when it's over 25 years old? True, though, that guitar looks untouched!
Well, Dino is a collector and purchased lots of Guilds back in the day. Many are untouched. Remember that Hans used some of Dino's instrument for his book(s).

Assuming those are US dollar amounts, Dino wants $5,700 for that Nightingale! Please correct me if his prices are in some other currency...
No, you are right, those are US $. But remember that importing anything into Europe adds roughly 25% in various taxes and shipping. And it is a NOS untouched guitar. Plus nobody complains that Gibson asks the same amount for their new guitars in 2014... See: http://www.zzounds.com/item--GIBLPSU14
Dino is a serious collector. He has no need to sell anything. But if Keith Richards (as example) needs a new guitar for a European tour he doesn't mind spending that amount of money. And I remember that LTG members (in the US) bought from Dino in the past and were very happy with him and the guitars.

I don't believe those pickups are active EMG's with Guild on the cover. I believe they are passive pickups and not made by EMG. I have a set of single coils with black plastic covers with Guild printed on them and they are a set of stacked humbuckers made by DiMarzio. I might be willing to bet they are a DiMarizo HB's.
At least the 1/15/88 pricelist said "Two EMG humbucking pickups". Now I guess that question can only be answered by Hans or any Westerly member. According to Dino they are EMG pickups. But somebody (LA?) mentioned before that some came with passive Kent Armstrongs that looked the same like EMGs.

If this Nightingale is actually a latter-day "X" model from Westerly, could that mean it's a prototype? That could explain the lettering and the theory by matsickma (if it's correct).
It's a normal serial number 81, why should it be a X or prototype?
Anyway, it seems to be one of the last ever made original 80's Nightingales, on the Nightbird pages I read only 82 were made. (But there was another 90's series called X-3000 which were also Nightingales).

Anyway, time for some Buddy Guy and his Nightingale with two active EMG 60's (according to Krysh). (lots's of Buddy after minute 4:08)

OK, so be it, Ralf. If it was already established at that point, then it'd be kind of crazy if they actually changed pickup configuration.

Yeah, and I'm just astonished that there are still unsold instruments that are that old. It must be that Dino doesn't really want to sell these. I know there's a shop in Massachusetts that has a similar approach.

I agree, Ralf, that the price is not outrageous given the guitar and its condition, it's just outrageous given my bank account balance! I love that guitar!

I clicked on the two "Guild Custom Solidbody" guitars in his inventory to see what they were - those are also very unique and very cool!

Chazmo, what is the MA music store you are talking about with "old unsold instruments"?

Scituate music, I think. I believe they have some NOS Westerly models (or at least they did a couple of years ago). One of our members (can't remember who) knows the place. I've never been in. I've seen it a few times when I've been in Scituate harbor.

Well, he has quite a selection of his Guilds for sale but basically since many many years already. Some are new, some are used. http://www.vintagemaster.ch/index.cfm?tem=1&spr=0&hpn=2
He also lists them on gbase: http://www.gbase.com/stores/vintagemaster/inventory

Wow! As much as I love Clapton and his playing, his tone in this video is awful!

That guitar is beautiful!

So, I've looked for info, but haven't found any. Is there any difference between nightingales and nightbirds of the same vintage, other than the f-holes of course?
