All wired up and assembled. The wire harness was not too bad, a little twisted and some broke wires but, all there and easily fixed.
I put a Epiphone '57 pickup in the neck to fill the whole until the HB-1 returns. Hans provided the file for the pickguard template which,
as you can see, fits great. Ken Nash provided all the missing parts (the blank shield trussrod cover fits beautifully and looks great.)
Played it for about 2 hours last night and all the '70's awesomeness is still there.

Anyone know what to do about the end pin situation? Never thought to search out an original one 'cause I never saw one offered.
I was thinking about doweling it and using a strap lock but..................

I could be wrong on this, (as seems to be the case a lot lately) but I believe and S-100 should have a solid tapered pin that is just a friction fit and doesn't use a screw.

Oh! I didn't know, but there is a friction metal end pin indeed! So it well could be! See the right side one here:

Hopefully somebody who has such an old S-100 available to check could answer, I think yours is stored a bit away to check.

Ralf,

Indeed the pin on the right is the correct one. Your "searchfu" amazes me as I was unable to find a photo for my post!

This is the '72 kit Ken Nash has. At first I thought it was threaded but it does look to be press fit.

And that endpin in Ken Nash's picture looks again different from the two pictures I posted, so it's a third type obviously. Ken at least shows no screw for it, so it seems to be press fit. Just not sure what purpose the grove has.

My 1973 S-100 came with the metal friction pin with no screw. Fortuitous or not someone had already drilled a second hole next to the tapered pin hole so I used that for my strap lock. Mine looks like the one Ralf posted in the second photo.
Thanks John

So, we are all sanded and grain filled with the second sanding sealer coat going on today (lost a couple of days 'cause it actually rained in So Cal this week.......weird huh.)
I spent most of the week searching and researching Nitro Lacquer options and availability. Cardinal is 20 minutes from me and seemed like the best option. Turns out I can pickup directly
but, only in gallons (not sure about color yet as I was undecided when last I spoke to them, maybe I can get a quart of color.)
Found the Behlen sanding sealer at Rockler and the aerosol can seemed fine for only the sealer. I still have questions about tints and colorants for the Nitro though. Need to find out
more about compatibility ( I have all I need in Pro-Line tints but not sure if it works with Lacquer.)
Anyway, in the sanding, filling and sealing process, I realized, hard as I try, this thing was never gonna be perfect as there are some previous sanding "issues" that would take
removing more material and reshaping, which I didn't want to do. As many of you know, if it's not perfect Black isn't really an option 'cause it shows everything. Never really been a fan
of White guitars, Newark St. kinda ruined Red for me (although it would be pretty cool in Fiesta Red) so this seems like my best choice............

Update: got tired of messing around and ordered from ReRanch. I can remove from Can and put it in the gun if I have to.

Hey Mike, I just remembered that you're in LA and I'm sure you probably already know the place, but do you ever use Mann Bros. on LaBrea? When I was doing furniture in LA I used them for a lot of my finish and tinting supplies. They've got water based, alcohol based and universal tints. Bought a LOT of lacquer there back in the day. You probably already have good sources, but just in case you've missed it, I thought I'd give you a shout out. It's a good place. Here's their website. http://www.mannbrothers.com/

We still use many of the Mann Bros products. The Pale Lac is the only solvent based (alcohol) Lacquer they still have.
Their water borne stuff is pretty good but not what I wanna use on this. I have all the Pro-Line tints which are supposed to be universal but I still need more info
on that (will need to do some tests also.) Thinking I'll just get a gallon of the Cardinal top coat and make the color myself.

Was planning to do the final polish today but, I found a couple of small spots I didn't like.
So, 2 or 3 more coats of clear will go on today and then another week to cure before polishing.

I really wanted to do the polishing today but since my neck pickup is still in the CA desert, I'll continue to be patient.

You killed it on this one, Mike. Gorgeous! Did you end up binding the fretboard? Looks like it in the picture.

By the way, the clear guard was the right choice.
