What’s the consensus about keeping guitars in cases versus leaving them out on wall hooks or stands?

I keep my four most active players hung on guitar hooks over my desk. It’s so easy to take them down and play them, plus, I like to look at them. There is indirect sunlight on them, but the only effect that seems to have had over years is to turn my ‘84 Epi Sheraton from it’s original vampire-like maple plywood pallor to an attractive light caramel, and to slightly darken a very light spruce top on a Blueridge. I don’t really think indirect sun is that damaging. Direct sunlight, of course, will quickly cook a finish. Sometimes it seems to me that these thin highly strung wooden boxes might prefer fresh air to the stuffy trapped air in a case, and that the vertical force on the neck might help keep it straight. But if I had a pre-war museum piece....that would probably stay in the case.

Keep 'em hanging where you can get to them and they'll be played more often. That's my own personal experience and Guilds, after all, ARE "made to be played!"

Add to that how good they look! And how they might you smile on a dark day.

Mine stay in cases. If it's not in the case, I'm playing it.
Three reasons:
First and foremost, in the case is the best way to maintain proper humidity. Winter heating and summer air conditioning can both lower humidity.

Second and third: teenage kids (and older kids who sometimes act like teens) and dogs.
No place is totally safe from flying objects.

Where I live hand tools rust while you use them. Mildew grows on your earlobes overnight. Lizards and geckos battle for dominance on the walls, while heavy-jawed ants patrol the baseboards. The cats do their best to defend the house from giant roaches and dinner plate-sized toads, but vermin manages to infiltrate on a regular basis. My instruments stay in their cases, and common sense dictates that I lock them when not in use.

Cases.

I have even trained Mrs. Fro to at least latch one latch so no one moves her guitar and has it fall out of the case. When playing out I do use a stand.

Stands. Since we spend summers in the Mid Atlantic and winters in Florida I've got humidity 'O plenty of so no need to worry about that. No kids or pets to bash 'em around.

Summer on cape cod I'd not sweat leaving 'em out. Winters with the dry heat, I'd be a bit more cautious.

Always in their cases when not being played or worked on.

Same reasons: kids, dogs, grandkids, granddogs...

I try to give each (somewhat) equal attention. One is usually on a stand and the others in their cases until I switch out usually every three days or so...

I had 4 of mine out on hangars. Just repainted my guitar room, and for now keeping them in the cases. Went with one of these...

I still have my hangars, so might put up a few. Gonna see if I can make a set of string last a little longer with them in the cases. Don't like the humidity swings in the winter.

My seven are all out... 4 on the Hercules hangers and 3 on stands. I keep the door closed and hooked to keep the cats out, and the humidifier on. Although my D-50 and 46 have been getting most of the play time lately, I try and play a tune or two on all of them every week. D

Mine must stay in the case. MTBD (Mean Time Before Destruction) at my house would be about 3 minutes with the kids and their surface to air missiles and hand to hand ground combat.

are your guitars in stands, hooks or cases?

Yes, yes and yes.

Electric on a stand in the corner.

Bass and a few of the current "favorites" on hangars.

Others in their cases.

This summer I have kept 2 regularly on stands and the rest in their cases. Haven't humidified this summer but check outdoor humidity regularly and make the assumption that indoor humidity is roughly 1/2 to 2/3rds that. I should get a hygrometer, but I also have the added assurance that all the guitar shops (I have talked to) in these parts do not worry about humidity. We will see. I still leave all in their cases during the winter with soundhole humidification.

Lets see- 3 guitars are out, 2 on stands, one on the bed. 1 mandolin is out, 2 fiddles and 2 banjos are out. The fiddles and banjos are in different tunings, The mandolin and 1 guitar are downstairs, 2 guitars upstairs.
Come winter I will keep more guitars in their cases.
