are your guitars in stands, hooks or cases?

Here in the Land of Random Seismic Disturbances, Southern California, I've always returned my instruments to their cases after I play. I've thought about getting a cabinet, or storing the guitars on hangers, but an Earthquake, even a small one, could get them swinging into and onto each other. At least in a case you have some protection if the ceiling decides to visit the floor.

Then there's the six dogs.........

They all stay in their cases in the closet. The D35 has been out of its case for awhile getting some fresh air. Also makes for a quick pick-up-and-strum.

Kept in the case for general protection until needed - and transported in the hardshell case when playing out. However, if playing out I put it on a fold up stand as soon as I get there - after 5 minutes I check the tuning as differing room temperatures can make some effect on the tuning - especially in winter.

Pretty much the same here; instruments are too valuable to me not to protect.

Subject: are your guitars in stands, hooks or cases?

Stands. Since we spend summers in the Mid Atlantic and winters in Florida I've got humidity 'O plenty of so no need to worry about that. No kids or pets to bash 'em around.

Summer on cape cod I'd not sweat leaving 'em out. Winters with the dry heat, I'd be a bit more cautious.

Thanks, Evenkeel, for your comments.

Interestingly, my newer guitars (Blueridge BR 70 and RK snj 26), which are mostly not in cases, need a little saddle shim in the winter, (piece of D string works fine), take it out in the summer. Doesn't seem to affect tone. I guess they shrink slightly. The older guitars I have seem to be impervious. I often pick a guitar up to play for only five or ten minutes, and taking out, unlocking, etc. a case is a bit of work for that little play. Additonally, hanging the guitars is a space saver; the empty cases go under beds or in closets.

Come winter time that changes when all of the acoustics retreat to their cases and proper humdifiers.........I aint completely crazy.............just sayin'.......

All of mine are on stands in my office/music room. The dog rarely is allowed in there and when he does go in, he'll do no more than sniff at a guitar, gentle sweet soul that he is. No kids in the house, and no traffic through that room. If my instruments were in cases, I'd play them even less than I do now. I also climate control the whole room. In addition to the convenience of having them within reach, I love looking at them. All the cases are in a large closet that's pretty much at its limit. Nothing's going in unless something else comes out.

To continue this discussion, I'll add that there's something special about turning a corner down the hall and catching a glimpse of a Guild just hanging there, catching the morning light, perhaps.

Makes me want to take it down and play it for a song or ten....
Wreaks havoc on any schedule, perceived or otherwise.

I like to keep mine out, either hanging on a wall or on a guitar stand. It looks good and they're easy to pick up and play, however, I have no children or dogs, which would change how I store them. However, I have a hydrometer and when the humidity goes below 30% I put my D50 and my Martin D16 in their case with my handy dandy home made humidifier, seen here:

My other guitars are not high value and seem to have survived the extremely dry California desert summers, A/C, and heat without any problems. I'm of the mind that these instruments can be acclimated to survive extreme conditions, but there is always the risk a crack could develop.

I'm firmly in the "keep 'em in the cases for protection" camp. I dedicate space in one closet for the cases, stored vertically with handles out, so it's just a quick grab to get one.
Every once in awhile you'll see a story here about that one-in-a-million accident damaging a fine guitar.....that wasn't in its case.

:D I must agree with Al. In fact when I first read thisthread , his words came to mind..On your lap, or in its case. To veer from that , at least around this house, ( dogs, kids, visitors,...)invites heartache.Time around here has proven that to be all too true ( thankfully never to a Guild).
I DO keep the cheapo plywood guitar out however....and it really shows!

All but a few are out. About 9 on the wall and the rest on stands. (I currently have approx 20.) No kids or pets to worry about. Never had a crack or accident in nearly 40 years.

For over 40 years, even when gigging, when not being played, in the case.

I always kept the case directly behind the amp when gigging. ON break, in the case.
I watched too many accidents on stage that sent a poor guitar player home in tears...

And when I'm not there to watch (there could be ghosts and deamons and critters and things), I know, the case is the best place. Yeah, just in case, its in the case.

NOW there has been a RECENT exception to this rule.

The new Guild A500 that I just inherited.

Its case is so nasty smelling!!!!
After getting the guitar cleaned up and setup and yeah, I love the sound...and the fact that a few weeks of work brought it back to life... It doesn't smell anymore...but the case does. I could not even think about putting it back in that nasty box.

Plus it was in there for 40 years, giving it a little time to be free...

HOWEVER!!!!!
A New case has been ordered and should be here any day now. And then, just like the rest, it will be protected the best that it possibly can, in a hard shell case.

Did you hear that? Damn ghosts.... Wanting to play my guitars....
