The posting about a somewhat unusual bridge that was offered on eBay reminded me that I still had to do the 'Drawer of the month' for February, so here it is.

Drawer of the month - Adjustable/AdjustoMatic bridges:

Since the early '70s there have been several different versions of the Guild AdjustoMatic bridge that was made by Muller in Germany and more or less replaced the 'Hagstrom' designed unit that had been used all through the ‘60s.

Here are several different versions of the bridge in chrome; some used ones and some 'new old stock'.

The same for the bridges in 'gold',

...... and some of the later ABM bridges that were introduced during the '80s.

Which brings us to the 'rare' variant that was the initial reason for choosing this drawer.

This bridge was introduced during the time that brass bridge saddles and nuts were becoming popular in an attempt to increase the sustain qualities of electric guitars. It is similar in design to the earlier versions with the roller saddles, but with solid brass saddles instead.

It could have been a very nice bridge that would have worked well for many players, but unfortunately the person who designed the bridge didn't really think it through. The way the saddles were designed made it impossible to turn the saddles around to achieve proper intonation when using specific string gauges, which made the bridge practically unusable. Instead of placing an order for 'reverse' saddles the whole bridge was scrapped and consequently you probably will not find any Guild with that bridge.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
