What's your Sea Ray; 34' / mid-late 80s / 454s? If so and if not already done, if you don't get out of it there's a re-power coming soon, no? Sea Rays are very popular down here. If the former owner wasn't paying the mortgage, he probably wasn't doing the maintenance either. Engine hours? Survey?

Our pooch CrimeDog never liked boats; never got comfortable in them but every time we came home, he was out on the dock telling us and the neighborhood how glad he was to have us back:
[IMG:289:320]http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r106/capnjuan/CD.jpg[/img]

He was just back from the vet...wearing his Dave Mathews Band shirt.

Good luck with the boat!

Boats in the 100' - 120' Westport league typically have 2,000 gal fuel tanks...or...if the owner is wealthy enough, he charters a shadow boat that hauls fuel....and security guards. Contrary to popular belief, piracy didn't go away because they stopped selling eyepatches at Halloween.

I had 8 months seatime as a deckhand in the merchant marine before I was drafted including shuttle tanker trips between San Franciso and Alaska. There's being cold and then there's being out on the water when it's cold. I'll bet that anything that will float has to be great fun there in the summer.

GoG: As your former Bro-in-law found out, the conventional definition of a boat is a hole in the water into which to throw money.

I e-looked at a few of those lake charmers...thought about how much fun it would be to piddle around in them in the summer on the NY lakes 'making the scene' as it would have been called back in the day; I guess that's why they call them dreamboats.

My neighbor across the canal has a mid-50s Chris Craft 22-odd foot mahogany runabout, keeps it in his garage...no offense but as captivating as a flawless late 50s Guild jazzbox...but with considerably more upkeep.

All you have to do is insure your guitars, watch the humidity, wipe them off from time to time and they just smile back at you, no?

Seemed to me this boat thread benefited from a bit of diversity.

It's a lousy picture but my Boy in Alaska closes on this boat tomorrow.

It's a 24 Ft Aluminum Atec, outboard equipped with both a jet & a prop lower unit. [img:449:168]http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid225/p364df36d9185cbadef527d995caf3c78/e9be23f4.jpg[/img]

It seems The Alaska River System offers some fine opportunities. Previous owner used it for Moose Hunting. My son claims he can haul two 4 wheeler ATV's in the thing.

My initial voyage is scheduled for the week of June 17 here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_William_Sound

[img:150:222]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a1/Prince_William_Sound_near_Columbia_Glacier.jpg/150px-Prince_William_Sound_near_Columbia_Glacier.jpg[/img] 19 hours of daylight, Shrimping is limited to 4 pots per boat, Halibut are in 400 ft of water, Salmon much closer to the surface with some rumour of casting for Pink Salmon on the surface with flys.

Yep, I raised that boy right.

Usually boats are built for either speed or comfort...that one looks like it was built for.............well......discomfort

PW Sound looks like an absolute wonderland. At the risk of having this sound BTDT, I was on an oil tanker making shuttle runs up Cook Inlet nearly 40 years ago. most breath-taking scenery I've ever seen...light and air like crystal.

Taking the ovation/oar?

Capn,

I'm just the Dad & know little of these things, I'm just going fishing.

The vast majority of Alaska is roadless. Alaska crazies run river trips hundreds of miles into the interior. If your destination is places like this:

This might not be the best choice of transport:

Pretty cool; you look like Bert Reynolds in Deliverance but without those two....you know....diddle dee dee dee dee dee dee dee (key of D)

I see it can handle rough water but what about smooth? Also don't see an ovation/oar...this thing registered with the Coast Guard?

I once asked a guy if he still had his boat, and he told me that he didn't, but he still manages to get the identical experience, in a simpler manner. He puts on his rubber boots and oilskins and a hat, then he gets into the shower and turns the cold water on to his face and head, making sure that it gets down his neck and up his arms, and that it's dribbling elsewhere underneath the rain gear. Then, when he's thoroughly cold and wet and pissed off, he rips up a bunch of hundred-dollar bills in pieces small enough to make it down the drain, till they're all gone.

As he said, an experience identical to owning an actual boat, but with way less trouble.

Pictures of the new boat at my kid's place in Alaska showed up in my e mail this morning, don't tell my kid I said this but for 20K this is one Fugly boat. The kids spent 4 months looking for this boat, Aquatic "Jeep" seems a good description, Alaska people are strange.

Now it begins; the 15 hp kicker ($2,000+) is ready for pickup,
GPS is on it's way from e bay, several other things as well, Oh and now the time line on the addition to the back of the barn has been moved up. Can't leave this baby out in the weather can we.

I also received a rather extensive list of "Goodies" to be watching for on Craigslist, Downriggers, shrimp traps, etc, etc. etc, etc.

Ugly or not, it looks like my Grandsons are gonna have some nice experiences.

Or a clown's shoe with no toes... but probably fast enough to outrun one of these Canadian Revenue cutters;

I don't know, Jeff I think it looks kinda cool. It's no Whitbred winner, but it looks really functional.

I lived on the West coast of Sweden for about five years, and the North Sea was about 1000 ft from my front door. Everybody had some kind of boat, in which they could pile in and camp on one of the many tiny islands for the weekend. This is the only kind of boat I've ever owned.

[IMG:373:533]http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o261/elgatorisueno/trissjolle.jpg[/img]

It's called a triss jolle -- "triss" meaning three or triple, and "jolle" meaning dinghy. They are made to do three things, and none of them optimally. It can be sailed, rowed, or motored.

Many locals turned their noses up at it because the area where we lived was known for boatbuilding since the 1200s, as well as sailracing -- America's Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, etc.

Met lots of KIWIS, coastie, all boatbuildersand aspiring sailracers!

I'm told this boat will run on a damp floor. Hope he's right, I've spent my share of time duck hunting from jet boats. It's take much profanity to pry them out of the mud when the driver miscalculates. Particularly when the jet plugs up with weeds & mud & the engine overheats.

Usually happens long about Sundown. [/img]

Graham,
That's one of the songs I've been planning to put into a medley of famous theme songs from television shows!

I'm planning one of just themes from westerns, too:
Have Gun Will Travel
Sugarfoot
Maverick
The Rebel
Wyatt Earp
Branded
Maybe a couple of others, and end it up with Rawhide!

I plan to call them my "TV sets".
:p   :? 8)
