Nicely done Guildmark. Finger picking a 12 string, to me, is in the stratosphere at this time, very impressive.

Gordon Lightfoot is an icon in these parts. Actually after he was felled by illness in 2002 he was flown here to Hamilton for his surgery and subsequent care. The surgeon is a fellow that I used to play baseball with and had nothing but kind words for Mr Lightfoot saying that he is a very humble and down to earth guy, who just happens to play the guitar. His first performance after his recovery was here to a guests only show where the surgeon and his tean were seated front and centre.

Well done

Guildmark -- Let me just say that I enjoyed all three songs and it is nice to see someone play a 12-string like it's not some weird hybred from another planet. Beautifully executed with wonderful dynamics. As someone who has a period predominantly used the twelve-string (F112s), I am constantly amazed at people who express amazement of them or even fear of playing them. "Would you like to try it?" "O, losh no! I could never do that." Strange. Great to see it.

On another subject - I tell people nearly every day that there are wonderful musicians in this world who far outweigh a great deal of the tripe on the airwaves - they just have other priorities or are out of the proximity to larger audiences or for one reason or another, haven't "made it" - whether they so wish it or not. You are proof positive of the wealth of talent around.

Also - there are plenty of video clips on YouTube by recognized name performers who don't come off with as much polish and confidence as you. Well done! dbs

 Thank you, Guys.

I have a theory that this is why people want to be musicians - positive feedback. Plenty of players will tell you, "Oh, I only do it for my personal satisfaction." I have no doubt this is true, but not the "only" part. I believe it's a fundamental need to know you're pretty good at something and that others might recognize it. That's why salesmen drive expensive cars. As George Carlin put it (paraphrased) - No one sits across from your desk and applauds, yelling, "Nice paperwork, Jim!" Oh, sure, they might clang a cowbell when a sale is made, but that's just to embarrass the other guys into cranking it up a notch. But, when you're a musician, you know immediately if you're any good - people clap, or nod their head, or tap their toe, or drop a buck in your tip jar, or buy your CD, or write down your web address. That's a big, big payoff.

I hear you about good players who go "undiscovered"! Drop by our local open mike any Tuesday night! A classical player came in last night who got a standing ovation - and deserved it. We got songwriters and players with all types of day jobs they wouldn't need if they got a break or made a couple of connections.

I'm not going to be able to do this forever. I'm already getting a little arthritis, having a little trouble remembering lyrics, needing more light to see the chart. But as long as I can do this - how can I not do this? So, thanks - very much. And now it's your fault I'm charged up to play another week

Hugh & his Guild

I came in from a rehearsal last night and turned on the tele. Normally, I'm not in on Saturday nights and haven't the foggiest what's on when. However, here was Hugh Laurie, the brilliant British comedic actor (Black Adder, Fry & Laurie, Jeeves & Wooster, House M.D.) standing on stage with a Guild dreadnaught - not sure but possibly a D50? He sang a mock protest song and had only a little trouble at a point changing chords. It was funny and so not to spoil the moment, I turned the set off just after. Hurrah for our side! dbs

What you saw was Laurie guest-hosting Saturday Night Live. Don't watch it much any more but hung around a while when I discovered he was on. I left during the farting sketch, and didn't catch the Guild sighting. Glad someone did, though.

I like Hugh Laurie in House, and I'll admit I am one of those who did not know he was British. Black Adder was terrific, but I've only seen two episodes a long time ago. Don't know the other shows, sorry.

Darryl,

We are finally in total agreement on Cher. "Super tramp", it's absolutely inspired.

Just sitting at home this afternoon catching up on emails from work and what not, got the TV on and CMT, it's nothing I normally have on as I'm generally a classic rock guy, but lately I've been gravitating to some country music I think more for the acoustic guitars than anything else, anyway they just ran three vids by The Wilkinsons, two of them, Fly (The Angel Song) and Boy oh Boy both have good Guild shots. The first one, Fly, could have been a commercial for Guild. Look like a D-50 to me, plenty of full frontal and a couple of direct headstock shots, watch out for the censors, and Boy oh Boy features a burst dread, looks like a D-55.

Dang, I'd forgotten about the Wilkinsons. You're right. The dad is the Guildie. I have their first two CDs and enjoyed them both. They sort of support a dream of mine, too - I'd love to be the dad backing up my daughter and son someday!

Spotted a Guild dread-nought on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" last night. The Chesterfield logo was clearly visible and it was being played by a member of the Max Weinburg Seven. I haven't seen one played by a member of Max's band before so it was a kick to see it. The guitar had a very dark (possibly a sunburst) finish.

 I have not read all this so it may have been said. How about the car commercial I think Dodge where it shows the Guild case in back?

I always look at headstocks now more than I ever did. Back in the 80's these cats were playing things that looked like Strats 8) but were not.

The guitar player for the Max Weinberg 7 was playing a black D40 on Conan O'brien the other noght (at least I think it was a D40) It was a black Guild dreadnaught with the chesterfield logo that's for sure.

Two nights ago I saw what i think was a Snickers commercial where a guy was playing guild in a band -- anyone seen that one? Don't remeber what kind of guitar, but the logo and headstock read loud and clear.
