Just again watched and listened to the John Denver YouTube vidio of John doing the "Bells of Rhymney."

I remember John's F2-12XL in mahogany.

This was his later Rosewood JF-55-12 w/Custom Shop "Tree of Life Inlays I believe.

The music for"Bells of Rhymney" was written by Pete Seeger, but the words were written by Idris Davies. (Day-Vees). As a member of the Davies Clan originally from Swansey (Swan-zie) and Rhymney (Rum-Nee), I remember trying to tell John how to pronounce correctly "Rhymney." It never stuck. Dang, I do miss him so. What a great performer!

Judy Collins now does say the town's name correctly when she does the song....and I believe she still smiles over at her monitor world sound engineer and out at her one house engineer when they happen to be the sons of the OGG and are some of the next generation of the Davies Clan.

"Carry It On, Carry It On!"

Anybody who has a D-28 can see their guitar on TV, but tonight on PBS, inbetween pleas for $$$$$$$$$$$ on "This Land is Your Land" from 2002, the Limelighters were playing a JF65-12. And of course, Tommy Smothers has his Guild also...

Well I've got to mention a Magnum P.I. rerun I saw a while back with Dennis Weaver playing cowboy cords on it off & on through the whole episode. A 6 string & I'm not as good as some of you are at noticing the model but on the 5 point list it has to be at least a 2.5.
Does anyone know anything about Guids & Dennis Weaver?

John Fogerty with a Guild??? I am a JCF Fan and that is news to me. I thought he was a Gibson LP/Fender Tele guy with a Strat here and there. Martins, Gibsons, and more recently, Taylors for acoustic.

I know his deceased brother Tom played a Starfire 6, his son Jeff said that Tom traded it to a music store in the early '70's.

CK

Fogarty played a couple of Rickenbackers, one so completely modified that it said "Acme" on the truss rod cover, and a couple of LP Black Beauty's (one w/ a 3/4 sized neck and a Bigsby) during most of CCR's span...never saw him playing any Guild electrics.

Blue Eyes

I recently read a wonderful biography of the Carter Family, Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?: The Carter Family & Their Legacy in American Music. The author relates the story behind Blue Eyes. I expect the story is widely known. For those who have not heard it, here is an entry from the Carter Family documentary on American Experience:
My Blue Eyes
In February 1939, without warning, Sara announced on the radio that she would like to dedicate a song to her friend Coy Bays, in California, and sang a moving rendition of "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes":

I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes
Who is sailing far over the sea;
I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes,
And I wonder if he ever thinks of me.

It had been six years since Coy and his family had left for California, and though Sara had written him her letters had been intercepted by Coy's mother, they had never reached him. But Coy was an avid fan of the Carters' show, and when he heard Sara singing out to him over the radio waves, he knew she had not forgotten him. Coy left immediately for Texas, and the two were married on February 20 in the town of Brackettsville, near Del Rio.

Didn't know that...thanks! :)

We must've posted within seconds of each other West. Yeah, I'm about 40 minutes from Lake Michigan, though I think I like the northern part of Lake Huron better. I had a 24 footer with full cabin & midberth sleeper for about 15 years. Some of the nicest getaways & vacations I've ever had!
!

Just now read your post about Lake Huron. I spent the greater part of my youth on Lake Huron, in East Tawas. From 1959 to 1964, Then we all moved down to the "big" city: Saginaw. The best memories of my life, living in Tawas, and playing in the forests on one side (Huron National Forest), and Tawas Bay on the other side.

No kidding? Then you probably know some of my family. Tawas is exactly the place I was thinking of in my previous post.

Remember Freel's Kings Market on the south end of town? Big cow out front. Owned by my cousin. Little red house across the street was my Grandparents place. My Grandfather pastored the little Nazarene church in town. Actually, he mortgaged his house to build the church.

Small world!

South end of town - Tawas City, or East Tawas? Along the lake was it? I remember the name Freel, don't remember a market with a cow in front. The only meat market I knew was on Newman st. on the corner, a few blocks in from the state park, a block from Chum's Bar. Klinger's or Klenow's was the name of that store. You do remember Chum's Bar, don't you?. For over 50 years, my Aunt Mary Byrd played the organ at Immaculate Heart of Mary church near the intersection of M-55 and Lake Road. She was very active in both towns, lived there all her life. Passed away in '04.

Stirred up enough memories?

Hey, what are you guys doin' - this ain't no trip down memory lane . . . This here's a Guild forum . . .

Tawas, just north of Townline Rd. Klenow's was the other, but there's also some Klinger's in town.

Was Chums the one on the front of the block facing the tracks & the park (torn down years ago), or is that the one in the middle of the first block (which is still there)?

I'm up there a couple times a year. Deer camp is north of town too!

A Guild-spotting on the YouTube

Now I don't watch so much TV, but I'm always checking out new music on the net. Although a lot of young rockers would say that I'm already knocking on the door to geezerdom, I still like to keep up on new music, especially since I live in the musically rich city of Portland, OR US. It always makes me happy to see newer musicians and bands wielding Guilds.

Here's a local fave singer-songwriter M. Ward playing a great sounding Dearmond M-75T through what looks and sounds like a Fender Twin.

And just for kicks, although no Guild or Dearmond spotted, here's a great performance on Letterman.

Enjoy.

Hello All. Here are some really rare spottings. I expect this is the first video featuring a Starfire Bass guitar. It took me awhile to figure out that it was bass guitar. It is from a very 1960s B movie. I don't recall the name. It might be best to forget it:

Here is another odd-ball sighting. I just caught a glimpse of someone from The Youngbloods playing on one of those very annoying Time-Life music commercials. He appears to be playing an Aristocrat. This file is large. I needed to store it that way in order to see the guitar clearly:

Here is a great live performance by Bare Naked Ladies and a Guild Bluesbird:

Well, that's my current offering. Enjoy.

That would be "Banana", also known as Lowell Levinger, the man behind http://www.vintageinstruments.com/
