Are the pins slotted/grooved, Sandy? Mine are. That's why I thought they might be plastic. Hard to tell...
I'd have to double check, but I think so. What I thought was odd was all the DV72s I've seen came with plastic pins as OEM, which is kind of silly for a top of the range guitar.

I have had a couple weeks with the Orpheum and I am really happy. Love the feel and sound. However, as some of you have noted in other threads, the tuners are not smooth and one of the plastic Guild logo tuner keys is slightly loose on the shaft. I have lubricated (as other have tried) with no noticeable improvement. Next time I put on new strings these are going on and the originals are going to be packed up and put in the case. I am still baffled as all of the other Gotoh SE700 tuners I have used are nice and smooth.

I've done the same with mine, and it's a huge (and simple) upgrade. The OEM tuners, despite being also called SE700s, are junk.

Well, I haven't had any trouble with mine, but then again mine is a slothead and maybe the design is differnt. Also, I may be using my Orpheum 12 a lot less than youse guys! :D

If I had to guess, I'd say the machines aren't the same on the slotheads, although I've never played on so I couldn't say for sure. On the other hand, and I played or owned a lot of the paddle head Orpheums, and the tuners on them were all universally bad.

The 2014 introduced slot head Orpheums did not use individual tuners but "3 in line" relic nickel sets, which were supplied by StewMac and are the StewMac Golden Age tuners. Same (but "6 in line") for the 12 strings. All Asian made.

Gotcha', Ralf. Thanks. That is quite right. Looks a lot like my (slothead) Martin D-12-20. I'll have to do a headstock comparison between the two some time.

Your 1970 Martin should have the real Waverly tuners which are quite different from the StewMac Golden Age tuners. Well yes, from a distance they look "similar"...but not really.
