The only archtop I see on Yamaha's website is the SA2200 which is an ES-335 type. It's made in Japan so it costs much more than the Korean or Indonesian Starfires. I'd say Guild's archtops and semi-hollows will stay in the line, though they could all move to Indonesia for production (to were the Yamahas are made). Yamaha have 3 series of solidbody models with the low and mid ends being made in Indonesia and top model made in Japan. I don't see any competition from the Guild line with these, especially since the Pacifica line is Strat-like. The acoustics, on the other hand, are another story and I'm not sure how Yamaha will see which models are competing against each other or redundant.
Yamaha did have some 'contender' electrics though. Their Gretsch-alike AES-1500 could have done well, but I think it was introduced at the wrong time. The Weddington series was nice, but was launched when superstrats were just getting ahold of the market. The AEX-502 had some corners cut, but was an amazing value. And the Revstar series is one endorser away from becoming the next big thing.

If Carlos Santana played his SG-2000 for more than just the Moonflower album, it would have been a big thing too.

To be fair, what other brand with money, distribution and decades of experience be better to buy Guild than Yamaha? No way would they sunset the brand. It will be just another line they carry. You think they maintain US production in Oxnard?

Quite a surprise. I’m going to be optimistic here. I think this elevates Yamaha by acquiring the US manufacturing presence. It gives them an opportunity to cater to a higher end acoustic audience. It also gives them a solid MIA electric line overnight. Sure there is some overlap that may result in consolidation of the MIA acoustic lines. Overall I think it expands their capabilities in a net positive way.

Perhaps with Yamaha’s expertise, sense of brand and deeper pockets it will result in an expansion of the US line. In a couple years maybe we will see a return of favorite models that Cordoba has been unwilling or unable to bankroll. At a minimum maybe they will stop the complete nonsense around model names 😎

Of course they could do just the opposite and squash the US component and focus solely on the machine made MIA lines. But I’m hoping they want to play with the big boys and do it all. Fingers crossed.

Oh boy, now we can speculate for weeks or months on end about what will happen. :)
I'm in.
I don't know what to think, just makes me nervous, after all the changes Guild has been through through the years. 0h for the good old days when guilds were guilds😀
Maybe they'll find those 16" F-body bucks so they can build a real F47.

Oooh, oooh!! First topic of speculation!

I hope so. I wondered what was gonna happen to the archback press and realized they may not actually shut down Oxnard. On the other hand, perhaps a local buyer would be very interested, between Taylor and L'Arivee?

But wondering where this will take Guild. Maybe they've been struggling to stay solvent during these rough times, post pandemic? Not sure.....
Looking back over the last 25 years, Guild has had a bumpy road with multiple owners and multiple manufacturing plants. I know it's probably done to keep the company going, but not a real good sign of things to come. Hope it doesn't come to having a genuine Guild, made in Japan. But it's getting closer.

Disclaimer: I am a "glass half empty" guy.

Personally, I expect that Yamaha will not need two competing lines of the lower end guitars. They sell a lot of those in their FG series. Although, some go much cheaper than any Guild " Westerly Series ". I just counted 42 models under $500 at Sweetwater. They show about 30 of them in the $1000-$2000 range. I know there are some high end Yamahas in the LS or LL series. So, what disappears and from what brand?

I don't know which way this will go.
