I had a few questions about the dual pickguard Guilds from the Westerly era. Was it something you had to special order when ordering the guitar or did they add a second pickguard at random? Is there any D-25’s with factory double pickguards?

It was an easy and popular special order option, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did simply build a few that way every so often because they were popular enough. Can't recall ever seeing a dual 'guard D25 but for sure we've seen 'em on D40's (and F50's) thanks to Richie Havens, so wouldn't surprise me.
He was so associated with the "look" that it was a standard feature of the Richie Havens D40 introduced in '03, the 2nd 'guard was shipped in the case for the owner to install at their discretion.
I did, as you can see my avatar.

The lefty D25 I had had postion dots on both sides of the fingerboard, but only one pickguard.

(I had it converted to a righty -- the pickguard being above the soundhole drove some people crazy!)

The JF55 12 string that I just bought which was made in Westerly, has the double pick guard. I wondered why some have them. Thanks for the question and information.

If you've ever seen a video of Richie Havens playing, you'd understand the utility of dual pickguards.

I wondered about that too, guess I figured most people simply slapped a second one on if they liked the look, but makes sense they'd produce some that way outside the Havens model. Was it a fad?, as you don't see that look probably since the mid 70s huh.

I'm a tweener, the symmetry is easy on the eyes and I like it on the darker tops, both D25s shown as examples look cool. I think on the natural tops it looks a little goofy to me, I don't know why.

I bought an old D40 that had double pgs. They looked as if it left factory that way. It was a 1973 D40 too. Still wish I had it but it as brutal on my fingerpads so gave it to a friend. He still has it...

btw, there is negligible tone difference vs a single PG. that was an interesting observation...

AFAIK the only "Standard production" double-guards were issued with the Richie Havens Signature D40's of Corona through New Hartford. The second 'guard was shipped in the case to be mounted or not, at the owner's discretion.
