I guess I could never afford a guitar with runout. Only had 1 Martin, '72 D28 and she did runout on me but her top was perfect. This Martin came from local legend who wanted Gibson's latest "Pre war Jumbo" this is going back near a couple decades, and I seen him later playing the Suthern Jumbo and big mistake, that old Martin way better sounding than the new Gibson but maybe it hadn't opened up yet...

There's nothing quite like a good straight braced D28. My '69 has a ton of play wear, but man is it loud, and it has a tone that can cut right through the mix in a jam. Still grateful to @richardp69 for selling it to me.

We runout of wine but could be worse, like when you runout of tissues and other stuff.

Sometimes I wish the D28 hadn't runout on me, but you could buy a whole lotta Guild with that money and I did.

She was a looker, mine, weird love/hate thing, didn't like it much for a whole year, then I liked it and never changed the strings.

Like all things, I don't miss it - right, keep telling yourself that - because it was too precious, I wasn't worthy, the usual, and it was worth too much to be loose at a party, people and especially wild kids are drawn to pretty guitars like flies to honey, culminating with Animal House guitar destruction possibilities, I was glad to pass it on while still in very good condition.

No truss rod cover folks, nothing to do but play.

But I missed it so much I had to have this. It's funny how much you can miss something that you never needed in the first place.

This one won't runout on me.

Not sure I agree Charlie. If you look at the top again, there's a pretty much continuous line on the treble side from the upper to lower bout, and it's not present on the bass side.

It could still be bookmatched I suppose, and I think @SFIV1967 expounded on that once, but it sure as hell doesn't look bookmatched "in the flesh". I imagine @AcornHouse might have an opinion on this as well.
On my tube I see a streak on the bass side that mirrors the location of the one you describe, just not as "visible", and I think the grain-reversal issue explains why it isn't as visible. It also occurred to me that perhaps that side had been inadvertently turned over before glue-up and therefor that side is no longer the one that would have been facing the treble side of the top, if you follow my drift.
I think that may also have reduced its visibility. In fact it just occurred to me that technically that may mean it isn't actually boookmatched

Otherwise I do agree with Ralf, I can see matching grain curves on both sides.
FWIW, Dana Bourgeois told me once that some of his best sounding tops aren't the prettiest ones, and many times he uses those tops for his black guitars.
@West R Lee:
Gotch're ears up good buddy?

Whereas what I thought was a "bear claw" is actually an "apple fritter". It is rare for me to find a bakery that sells both so I tend to ask for one and be served whatever they have. Pointing at the case eliminates some confusion.
If you hold up your fingers for "How many?" and smile and nod vigorously when they're putting 'em in the bag sometimes they'll take pity and slip you a freebie.

West,
I just listened to your cover of Jimmy Buffett's "The Captain and the Kid." I like it a lot. Really authentic.
Well thank you very much Rich. That was a long time ago for sure. My first few years on LTG some of us used to trade music via Soundclick. In fact, as I recall, Scratch and DapmDave (I think is the name Dave used to use) traded files and would overlay lead, rhythm, vocals.....whatever. I keep those so my grandkids can hear my voice when I'm gone. I'd like to do some new stuff, and would love to be able to post video, but I just seem to have too many technical issues for this feeble, old, and tech ignorant mind. I know it's easy for some, but for instance, right now I've lost some password I use to download phone apps, and haven't even been able to recover even it via the phone store or Apple. I'll have to get a new number to fix it from what I gather. 🤷‍♂️ But thanks again Rich.

"Hey, Brad, which of the old martins are your favorites? Just curious!!"

The old model 42s were my favorites. 00 and 000.
