Jazz,

I am a little confused though.. I thought it was the seller (shipper) who has to file claims with these guys when things go awry.

Yes, the shipper has to file claims, but I was doing most of the hard work, seeing as how I had already paid for the guitar and felt some sort of ownership link to it. But I've gotten over that recently.

Anyway, the offer still stands regarding hand-shuttling the guitar around up here in New England if you need me.

Thanks Chaz. I'll let you know how it pans out.

Would you guys recommend sending it straight to Guild/FMIC in Nashville at all? I heard they've done some great stuff.

Jazz, (just my opin...) it couldn't hurt to contact Fender, tell 'em the story, and see what happens. Your luck might improve if you had a Guild/Fender dealer actually do this for you, but indeed the few cases we've talked about here in the last couple of years have been rather good stories. But, I think Nashville has taken these axes in for warrantee repairs which yours wouldn't qualify for. That said, if they need the work, it could be something they'd want to do. The prices they've charged (supplemental to the warrantee work) have been quite reasonable for the few folks that have gone through the process.

It's a good idea, Jazz. Definitely take the first steps there once you've gotten the seller locked into a course of action.

Hi Jazzman: whoever is paying for the repairs sends it ... unless your seller has already paid you to send it. Yes; they do strong work ... it usually takes a long time. Since Guild / Nashville recently dumped 140 Tacoma 2nds?, maybe that will speed things up. Good luck! CJ

Oh I would definitely get the money from the seller ahead of time, then I would send it out.

I suppose timeframe doesn't matter much... I've already had the busted up guitar in my room for long time now anyway.

CJ, do you know anything more about that Kids Rock donation? 140 Guild acoustics? That's rather significant, and your post is the first I'd heard about it.

Do you know what they're donating? Why did you say those were Tacoma 2nds??

Hi Charlie; I don't know anything more than the idle chatter in this LTG thread and in the link posted above; don't really know what they are donating and said they were Tacoma 2nds because, unless they just gave away GADs - which apparently sell - or they already have a boatload of CT Fubars, where would they come up with 140 Guild acoustic guitars?

It's speculation on my part but it makes (dollars and) cents. The charity writeoff per guitar is the financial equivalent of what they could get selling them off the loading dock to White Van Music, puts an end to FMIC's reputation-killing practice of infusing the Tacoma 'used' guitars into the market via smarmy eBay sellers, and earns them some public relations buzz ... and since the event took place in Nashville where Guild's custom/repair shop is .... Who knows but, if they had that many to move ... J

I just read this thread for the first time, and I feel like I need to go puke.

Stay strong, jazzmang... you've had some seriously bad luck, but I hope you get both of those damaged GORGEOUS guitars sorted out & back to as good or better than new.

I feel for ya... I really do. And, I'd want blood from UPS. :x They can deny claims all day long & suggest sub-standard packaging was the culprit, etc., but where were they with these excuses when they accepted the package and the $ that was paid to them for the insurance???

While there may be some responsibility on the shipper, that box was handled roughly by UPS... otherwise, the damage never would have occurred in the first place.

Hang in there, and I hope this is made right one way or another... you certainly deserve it.

Jazzy,

If there's a way you can get that thing to the Guild/Fender Custom Shop in Nashville, I'd just about guarantee it would come back better than new. Like somebody said, it might take a while and cost a bunch, but worth it.

Update:

Summary:

-UPS completely denied the claim on the D-100C b/c the shipper used a packing box and not a shipping box (there's a difference!)
- Seller requested a reinspection, UPS still denied it.
- Finally, I had to essentially break it down to the seller and tell him that he was at fault for not packing it properly, as instructed by UPS for it to be covered under their insurer.

Here's the new stuff:

Finally, the seller agreed (after I essentially threatened legal action) to allow me to send the guitar off to Guild in Nashville to get an estimate on it.

I took it into my local Guild guys for them to send it to Nashville. Funny part? It got damaged AGAIN from here to Nashville.
This time it was insured with USPS for $1000. They paid up $320 for the damage within 5 days.

Anyway, the guitar is at Nashville. The estimate was as follows:

Neck reset and refret: $320
Repair neck cracks: $40
Repair/reglue binding: $40
Complete refinish: $640
Reassemble, set-up: $120
Freight: $35
USPS Credit: -$320

Total: $875.00

Seller agreed to pay for most of it. I'll pay around $200, as it will have some cosmetic improvements when its done.

ETA? 60 days.

also reading this topic for the first time.

i imagine for their encore, UPS punted a Ming Dynasty vase into the back of a delivery truck. (yes, i know; the seller was mostly to blame; i just wanted to say that.)

so sorry, man. so sorry. here's to a brilliant restoration...

Just a quick update for now... I'll have pics later.

The D-100 arrived from Nashville today and me and my luthier (the awesome Slaus from Atlanta Guitar Repair) went over it with a fine-toothed comb.

Just as a recap, the guitar had been damaged (see earlier posts) and I had it sent in to Guild's 'Custom-turned-repair' Shop in Nashville.

She had a neck reset, fretboard replane/refret, fretboard crack repair, full body refinish, bracing check, and binding repair.

To sum the end result up, their work is absolutely maginificent.
There are absolutely NO signs of the whiplash cracks on the neck. The neck reset and planing/refret of the fingerboard are spot-on. They ended up replacing ALL of the binding with some great-looking flamed maple binding.
The refinish is factory-fresh and is ridiculously good looking.

All-in-all, I'm confident in saying that these guys do world-class work.

I'll post some pictures as soon as I can stop playing her!
